Afro hair myths!

Kinky hair is weak and breaks easily!

False!

I hear it all the time, ladies saying their hair is type 4c or tightly coily and this hair type is the weak and prone to breakage. Tightly coily ladies feel their hair is the hardest hair to maintain  and takes the longest to see hair growth retention. I understand why  many black afro textured hair ladies would think this way because this is a popular hair myth that circulates within the black community. However, once you finish reading this blog you will be empowered to view your Afro hair in a better light.

The popular belief about Afro hair does not match the science of Afro hair.  The curlier the hair is the more disulfide protein bonds the hair strand will have. Disulfides are protein bonds that make up some of the layers of each hair shaft. Afro hair has lots of these protein layers, and each of these layers provide strength to your hair strands. When a person with Afro textured hair relaxes their hair straight, these protein bonds are broken down, basically damaged, to give the end result of straighter smoother shinier hair. Although this may look good to some, this leaves the hair strands severely vulnerable to damage, because the hair has lost a lot of its natural protective layer.

So now you know that your kinky, tightly coiled hair is not weak by nature. But God has blessed Afro hair strands with extra layers of protein for its protection, the same as we have with our built in sunscreen of melanin. Truly God has given our bodies everything that we need for vibrant health and life. Stop calling your hair weak, and start calling it strong, because it is strong. Now this does not mean you can treat it any type of way, because hair itself is just a fiber. So adopt for yourself a good haircare beauty regimen and take care of your crown of glory. Truly God has blessed women with a beautiful crown, no matter the texture.

Proverbs 23:7 As a man thinketh within himself, so is he.............
Think good thoughts towards your hair!
Think of it as a glorious crown because it is!

Change your mind about your coils and your coils will work for you and not against you!

Ms.Vee's Braid, Retain & Grow haircare method

BRAID RETAIN AND GROW

The fastest  way to grow your hair to great lengths.

This method, you are about to learn, will grow your hair longer, fuller and stronger. Each step must be follow to achieve maximum results, unless otherwise stated. When followed correctly your hair will grow longer and you will retain the length. After 3 months on this program you will see fuller longer healthier hair.

So what is the Braid, Retain & Grow haircare method?

It consist of wearing your hair in medium to large size braids for 10 week intervals over a period of 6 months to a year. What makes this method unique is how you prepare your hair for the braids, how you take care of your scalp while your hair is braided and how you remove the braids.

Step one:  Choose a style

Medium size extension braids or kinky twists (keep in 10 weeks before take down)
large size extension braids or kinky twists (keep in 10 weeks before take down)
Two strand twists on natural hair (2 to 4 weeks before take down)
Individual small braids on natural hair (keep in 4 weeks before take down)

These are the only styles recommended for the Braid, Retain & Grow haircare method.

Step two: Cleanse and Strengthen your hair

Prepare your hair for the braid process by cleansing, strengthening and moisturizing.
Cleanse your hair and scalp with a non sulfate shampoo or  conditioning cleanser.
Protect your hair strands from the braiding process by giving your hair a protein treatment.
The aphogee 2 step protein treatment is recommended please follow manufacturers instructions. Whichever protein treatment you choose be sure it has hydrolyzed keratin protein listed in the first 3 ingredients and that you sit under a hooded dryer to ensure that the protein adheres to your hair strands. This step will keep you from getting additional breakage from the braids or extensions.
Follow all protein treatments with a deep moisturizing conditioner.
After deep conditioning apply a leave in conditioner and proceed with your braided style.
Do not use a blow dryer or flat iron before braiding hair.

Step three:      The braid process

As you proceed with your desired braid style, you will need to coat each piece of your natural hair with a good quality shea butter, before adding the hair extension. Be sure to do this section by section, this will keep your hair lubricated and moisturized while being covered with the hair extensions.

Braid extension tips:
Never braid your hair in micro sections when applying extensions.
Never use a thick piece of extension hair on a small piece of your hair.
Do not make large braids longer than 20 inches.
Never pull your individual braid extensions back tightly or in the same direction day to day.
When possible stay away from colored extensions because they have higher amounts of chemicals on them which dry your natural hair out.

Step four:  Scalp care while your hair is braided in extensions.

Cleanse your scalp and hair once a week, this is a must for maximum growth results.
How to cleanse your scalp while wearing braids.
Never sacrifice your scalp health for the sake of keeping braids in longer.
Lightly spray your braids with a conditioning braid spray.
Apply natural oils to your scalp daily http://hairnfaith.blogspot.com/2012/10/oiling-your-scalp-daily-makes-black.html and gently massage for 5 minutes (use a timer)

Step five: Braid take down

Do not leave braids in longer than the recommend time. Calendar in your take down day and take your time with the process. Once you have removed all of the extension hair apply a thick conditioner and let it sit for 7 minutes. Then proceed to separate or untangle your hair with your fingers. Removing any shed hairs, lint and tangles as you go. Untangle your hair with your fingers before using a comb. When you do use a comb, untangle with a seamless comb to eliminate breakage. Once you  are confident that all your tangles are removed then proceed with your shampoo and deep condition process. Collect all of your shed hair, so you can examine how much hair you lost each braid session. By doing this you will become more familiar with what your normal hair shed rate is, this will enable you to know if your hair is shedding excessively or normal. For detailed tips to removing your braid extensions read here.

Allow your hair to rest, one week between your braid extensions style.

Once you examine the strength of your hair during your one week of rest, decide then if you need another protein treatment. If you feel your hair is strong enough then you can skip the protein treatment for your next braid extensions. However you will need to give yourself a hard protein treatment after the next take down.

Get started today and longer, stronger hair will soon be yours!

Why your hair growth aides are not working for you.

Finding a growth aid that is right for you (Part one)

Many people use growth aids, some say they work others say they do not. Most of the popular growth aids have no scientific evidence of them actually assisting you with hair growth. But we know all to well, science is not always right. Those who do not believe that growth aids help are usually those who have tried growth aids and had no success and those who say they do work are those who have had success with growth aids.

Growth aids do work, the error which most people make is jumping on a bandwagon and not using the right growth aid for their hair issue. Growth aids are not one size fits all. If you are experiencing slow hair growth, you first must try to figure out why your hair is growing so slow. Most people believe that hair growth is hereditary and if you never had long hair as a child then you will not be able to obtain long hair ever. This is one of the biggest hair myths.

Lets look at some of the popular growth aids you read about on hair forums:

Miconazole nitrate, vagina yeast infection cream, is a popular one that many who are brave enough to try, have claimed it grows their hair as much as one inch per month. But their are just as many who say this did nothing for their hair growth. Miconazole nitrate is an anti-fungal medication, it kills yeast found in the vagina area and this is the purpose it is sold for. If you use this product on your scalp and you do not have yeast buildup, then this product will not work for you, it may even destroy some good bacteria that our body needs. Fungus growth is a huge part of the reason some women experience slow growth or hair loss, so it is understandable if someone uses this and their is fungus growth that this product will kill the fungus and the eggs, this will free up the hair follicles to read its maximum growth potential. So if you do not have fungus growth this product will do nothing for your hair growth. These products do not produce more hair from the scalp, it just has the potential to kill fungus growth and eggs on top of the scalp.

Sulfur powder, MSM, MTG:

These ingredients also kill fungus growth on the scalp when applied tropically. These products will not produce additional hair growth or extend your hairs growth phase, it kills the fungus so you hair can reach its full growth potential.

Megatek:

Many use this product to increase their hair growth and claim it works wonders. This is an protein product that you apply to hair (not the scalp) it strengthens your hair follicles and keeps your hair from breaking so easily when manipulated. The main problem with this product is that it is not marketed for human use, so their are no instructions for use on humans. I read about people applying this to their scalp and then covering their hair follicles with a plastic bag. This is only clogging your hair follicles and creating a situation in which your hair will grow even slower. If you make a choice to use this product only apply it to your hair strands and do not cover with a plastic bag. Use at your own risk.

I have covered three of the most commonly talked about hair growth aids. None of these products do I approve or use for hair growth or haircare. Use these products at your own risk. The purpose of this article is to make you think about the cause of your slow hair growth before you jump on a bandwagon of products.
