Never blow dry your hair!

In order to maintain healthy growing natural hair, you must have a routine that keeps your hair moisturized. Using a blow dryer is counterproductive to keeping your hair hydrated. Many naturals use a blow dryer to quickly stretch their coily hair. However, in the process of giving your hair stretch, it sucks all the moisture from the hair. This is the main reason that you should never ever, ever. ever, ever use a blow dryer on your hair.

When I get my hair braided, my braider uses the blow dryer to stretch my hair. What do I do about this?
Afro hair is perfect for braiding in its natural state. A good braider should not have to blow dry your hair in order to braid it. It should look just as good being braided in its natural perfect state. Always shampoo, deep condition, detangle and moisturize the hair before getting your hair braided.

Two all natural heat free ways to stretch hair

1.  Braid your hair in  5 to 7 loose plaits, and let it air dry. Your hair will have a very nice healthy stretch.

2. Roll hair on magnetic rollers, using slim sections. Let hair air dry. Your hair will have awesome stretch, superior to that you get from blow drying.

So what is the problem with blow drying the hair,  before getting braid extensions?

As previously stated, blow dryers  suck all the moisture from the hair. Then adding the fake hair on top of your natural hair dries it out, even more.  Fake hair is made up of a type of plastic.  As this plastic lays on top of your hair, it sucks more moisture from your already scorched blow dried hair. The combination of the blow dryer and the plastic fiber is not conducive to keeping your Afro hair hydrated.

When you remove the fake hair after wearing it for several weeks or months, you lose more hair than you should.  This is due to your coils drying out under the extensions.  As the weight of the fake hair swings back and forth  week after week, your hair begins to weaken. Thus when you remove the extensions, that weakened dried out hair breaks easily. What you think is shed hair, also ends up being breakage.

What about when I deep condition?
When a deep conditioner tells you to use heat, they are not referring to the harsh heat of a blow dryer. You use a heat cap, steamer or sit under a soft bonnet dryer. Invest in one of those items, for your healthy hair journey.

Christmas gift list:  steamer, heat cap or bonnet dryer.

Stop the majority of your breakage

Most hair breakage is caused by the hair tools we use for grooming. Here I offer some healthy alternatives for some very popular hair tools we use as black women.

Hair tool #1: Combs
Most women use a comb, to style and remove tangles.  If you use combs to groom your hair, stop using them for 30 days. You will notice that you retain a lot more length by using a comb on your tresses.

Instead of relying on a comb to remove your tangles, use your fingers.  Fingers and thumbs can do an amazing job of removing tangles from any type of Afro curly hair. No curl type is to difficult that it cannot be  finger detangled.

How to finger detangle
Take small sections
Do not expect it to work as quickly as using a comb.
Use water or a detangling product
Untangle to remove knots do not expect your Afro hair to be totally free of tangles.

How to make parts without using a comb
Untangle hair with your fingers. Use your fingers to create your first part.  Go back and clean your part up using a knitting needle or the pointy part of a good quality rattail comb.  Avoid those cheap rattail combs which are rough, those will break your hair worst than a comb. You want a good quality rattail comb that is smooth.

Hair tool #2: Brushes and tangle teasers
I am sure you have watched dozens of youtube videos of women raking brushes or tangle teasers through their coily hair. And it looks so good. However using a brush on your coils is so unnecessary and unhealthy. The brush rakes across your hair cuticle and roughs it up. Each time you rake the brush through your hair you are weakening your hair cuticle little by little. The damage is slow which is why most do not notice or relate the damage to the brush.

If you are not reaching your hair length goals eliminate hair brushes completely from your hair regimen. Your hair will be healthier for it. Change your mindset about your coily hair. When you do a bun do not think your hair has to look sleek like Caucasian hair in order for it to look polished. Accept your hair however it lays, as long as it is neat.
Hair has been smoothed back by using a little gel and my palms. Once in place hair is tied down with a scarf for 30 minutes or overnight. Afro hair will dry into any shape you mold it into. No brush needed.

Neat does not mean sleek.

Smoothing your hair without a brush
Apply your product on wet hair.
Spend time using your palms and product to smooth the hair back.
Tie hair down immediately using a satin scarf.
Your hair will dry neat and flat.
If you must, you can use a toothbrush on your edges.

Hair tool #3: Blow dryer
A blow dryer is one of the worst types of heat you can use on any type of hair. No matter the curl type. Blow drying leaves the hair hard because all moisture is removed. Blow drying is not conducive to Afro coily hair. Never blow dry your hair if you want to retain length and hydration.

ORDER MAGNETIC ROLLERS HERE

Two easy ways to stretch the hair without a blow dryer

Option A:
Set your hair using magnetic rollers on very wet hair.

Allow hair to air dry, the next day your hair will be stretched but moisturized and soft.

Option B:
Allow  hair to air dry by 70%, then create your two strand twists.  You will have more stretch to your twist out, setting it this way.

Hair tool #4: Flat irons
Each time you flat iron the hair you stand a big chance of receiving heat damage. Any type of heat straightening changes the hair structure slightly. Even if your hair reverts. Your hair is still not the same. There is no good  substitute for flat ironing the hair. Nothing healthy will give you the look of flat ironed hair.

Ways to reduce your chances of heat damage from flat ironing of heat straightening

  • When you get ready to flat iron, do not also blow dry the hair.
  • Let your hair air dry, so you have less damage.
  • You can also stretch your hair by doing a roller set before you flat iron.
  • Doing so will help you apply less heat passes to get your hair straight
  • Always deep condition your hair well before you flat iron.
  • If you are having dry hair issues never heat straighten your hair. You will damage it.
  • Use a silicone base heat protectant

Applying these tips to your hair care regimen will enable you to retain a lot more length. You will also have healthier hydrated hair.

Your hair conditioning plan

Your hair care products should consist of moisturizing and strengthening ingredients.

A hair conditioning plan is greatly recommended for those who desire to grow their hair to bra strap length and beyond.

Growing your hair beyond mid back length requires using protein treatments correctly and consistently. Protein is what gives your hair strands extra reinforcement to not snap or break so easily.

More information about protein treatments HERE

Here are 2 examples of  hair conditioning plans for different hair lifestyles.

Understand that your hair conditioning plan greatly depends on the current condition of your hair and your hair lifestyle

NATURAL QUEEN ZURI

Her hair stats:
  • Curl type 4
  • Mid back length
  • Fully natural for 3 years
  • Her hair stays moisturized for at least 3 or more days.
  • Flat irons her hair about 3 times per year
  • Follows the CoilyQueens Hair care Method

Zuri's Hair Conditioning Plan:
She will need a regular high quality protein treatment once per month. A good moisturizing regimen must be combined with the strong protein.  Three reasons why she needs a strong protein treatment.

1. Her hair is long and she wants to retain it.
2. She desires to grow her hair to waist length.
3. She  heat straightens her hair.

How her plan looks on paper and recommended products

EXPLANATION OF HER PLAN
Because a hard protein treatment is recommended, the conditioners Zuri uses are low on protein.  She will concentrate on using moisturizing conditioners. The deep conditioner, regular conditioner and leave in conditioners chosen for her are either protein free or low in proteins. She is getting plenty or protein from the aphogee 2 step treatment. The TGIN triple (no protein) moisture conditioner,  helps to restore her moisture after she uses the aphogee protein treatment. She will baggy for 3 nights when she uses the aphogee 2 step once per month. The As I am hydration elation is her low protein weekly quick conditioner. She will hot oil treat her hair twice a month. The hot oil is done after deep conditioning. This will help combat her use of harsh heat.

She will rotate these products. Aphogee 2 step once per month. The TGIN triple moisture conditioner, once per week. The As I am hydration elation once per week. Leave in daily or as needed. Hot oil treatment every other week and after heat straightening.

NATURAL QUEEN ANYELINA

Anyelina's hair stats:

  • Thick hair
  • Curl type 4ab
  • Natural 3 years
  • No heat
  • Wants to grow her hair to its fullest potential.
  • Uses the CoilyQueens Method

EXPLANATION OF HER PLAN
A mild protein treatment is recommended to help keep her hair consistently strong. This will enable her to retain most of her growth each month. She does not heat straighten, so a hard protein treatment is not needed. She will use the protein reconstructor once every two weeks. She conditions once a week with a moisturizing DC then conditions with a protein DC once per week. The Mielle is a good protein conditioner while the hydration elation is a mild protein but deeply moisturizing DC. She is deep conditioning twice a week to keep her very thick hair easy to manage and style. If she continues this conditioning plan along with the CoilyQueens Regimen she will be able to grow and retain hair down her back.

Best type of flat iron for Natural hair

Do titanium flat irons get the hair straighter than ceramic irons?  Should I use one on my Afro curly hair?

YES, they do get the hair straighter than ceramic flat irons. They have higher amounts of heat.

NO!
Not if your goal is to keep your hair healthy and wear it natural the majority of the time.

Yes!
If your goal is to be a straight hair natural. You are natural but you desire to wear your hair heat straightened most of the time. Titanium flat irons give you a much silkier, smoother finish than a ceramic flat iron. Expect your hair to come out straighter and require fewer passes. Choose a flat iron which has a digital heat setting so you know what temperature you are using.

The chances of heat damage are greater with titanium plates. Keep that in mind if you choose one.

Here are some top consumer rated titanium flat irons:

Different ways to straighten your hair

OLD FASHION PRESSING COMB

You can purchase a pressing comb from almost any beauty supply
store. You place the pressing comb on the stove, to heat it. How straight the hair gets depends on how hot you allow the comb to get. Pressing one's hair is fairly easy to do at home. However, you get better results, allowing a professional to do it. Pressing combs aka hot combs can be dangerous because there is no way to know the temperature of the comb. It takes lots of practice and skill to get a good press and not burn your hair out. This is temporary straightening.

The chances of heat damage are moderate to high.

FLAT IRON

This is the most popular way women straighten their hair. Flat ironing is easy to do at home.  You want a flat iron with ceramic plates, and a number temperature setting. Reduce your chances of heat damage by staying under 410 degrees. Always use the flat iron on clean hair, followed by the comb chase method. Those two rules will give you straighter hair. This method is temporary, depending on the amount of moisture your hair is exposed to.

The chances of heat damage are mild to moderate

Unless your goal is to be  a straight haired natural stay away from titanium flat irons. Those irons get much hotter and puts you at a high risk of heat damage. Titanium flat irons do deliver a smoother, silkier flat iron, but at a cost to your hair.

Brazilian Keratin Treatment

This is not to be confused with a regular keratin protein treatment. BKT should always be done by a professional. There are several different types of these treatments. The products used are very strong. This is a permanent straightening method. Large amounts of proteins are used followed by very intense heat. Many times you will be told you can go back and forth between straight and curly hair. Touch ups are done on your new growth only. This straightening method is expensive, but generally does not require as touch ups frequent.

Expect a permanent change in your curl pattern. This is permanent and equivalent to a relaxer.

Silk press
This is an upgraded old fashion press, using a flat iron. Your stylists might use different silk press products to help you condition and protect your hair. These products normally include protein rich conditioners moisture and products designed for heat protection. Your silk press should have more bounce and body than the traditional press. A silk press should be light, silky and bouncy. Giving your natural hair the look of a relaxer. Best done professional for pristine results.

High chances of heat damage

Dominican blow out

The way many Dominican hairstylist straighten Afro hair. It is a combination of silicone products, blow drying using a brush, flat ironing on high heat. The purpose is to get the hair super silky while maintaining lots of body. You have way more bounce than a regular old fashion press.

High chance of heat damage.

Not a permanent service but can lead to permanent straight hair. Raking the brush through your curls, while blow drying with high heat is very damaging.  This service gives you 3 stresses on your hair: the brush, blow dryer and flat iron.

Straightening 4C tightly coily hair

This regimen is an important  key to heat straightening tightly coily hair and reducing your chances of heat damage.

The following regimen should be done 3 weeks prior to flat ironing.

Follow these steps for 3 weeks prior to heat straightening your hair.
Notice you apply the aphogee 2 step treatment day 19, this is 3 days before your flat ironing day.

Be sure what you do on what day. The steps are very specific.

PRODUCTS NEEDED BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

Clarifying or deep cleansing shampoo
Moisturizing non sulfate shampoo
Aphogee 2 step treatment
Moisturizing deep conditoner
Leave in conditioner
Organic Apple cider vinegar
Silicone heat protectant
Anti humectant
Ceramic flat iron
Seamless comb

DAY 22 STEP BY STEP:

Step one) Shampoo hair with a shampoo that has a PH of  6.0-7.0.

Step two) Deep condition with a moisturizing conditioner using heat for 20 minutes.

Step three) Apply a protein spray to your hair strands to protect them from the excessive heat.

Step four) Apply a good leave in conditioner

Step five) Braid hair into large sections and allow your hair to air dry. Do not blow dry this is a good way to get heat damage by applying double heat. Air dry only.

Step six) Apply more leave in conditioner then apply heat protection that contains silicones. Silicones help protect your hair from heat  straightening.  Allow the product to air dry on hair before you flat iron or press your hair.

Step seven)  To reduce the chances of heat damage keep heat tool between 350 and 400 degrees.
Do not do more than 3 passes per section.

Step eight)  The flat iron
Detangle hair with seamless comb
Gently smooth flat iron over small section of hair
Comb through section with seamless comb again. (repeat if needed)
The next pass uses the comb chase method.
Your hair should be straight using this method.
If not then make your section smaller the next time.

After you complete each section smooth your fingers or comb through section to see if hair breaks or falls out. If it does then you are using to high of heat, reduce heat for next heat pass.
Flat iron 2014

Smooth a little grease or anti humectant over each section as you finish it. This will help keep hair from reverting so quickly. Rolling the hair with a large roller will also help.
Use after heat straightening. Helps to prevent reversion  and gives amazing sheen.

THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT HEAT STRAIGHTENING

Your flat ironed hair should feel soft and not break easily.
If your hair feels rough or hard, then the products you use are not good enough for your hair.
Search for better products to give you more moisture.
Also examine how healthy your hair is before you heat straighten.
Never heat straighten dehydrated damaged hair.

7 Hair Care Traps

1)  SILK PRESSES AND HEAT STRAIGHTENING

If you desire to grow your natural hair healthy and long, heat straightening it is not a good ideal. Once a year is okay. But even then it depends on the amount of heat and techniques you use. Stay away from Dominicans salons. Stay away from any heat straightening service which uses heat higher than 410 degrees. Lots of naturals are ending up with irreversible heat damage, due to wanting straight hair.

LEARN HOW TO PREVENT HEAT DAMAGE HERE

2)  TEXTURIZERS

Some naturals become frustrated with their natural coil. They think that putting a texturizer in it will turn their type 4 hair into type 3 hair. They desire to loosen their curl slightly. A texturizer is just another word for relaxer. You are putting the same chemical in your hair. It is also permanent. Texturizers rarely give people the results they desire. They are unpredictable. The average natural who texturizes their hair, ends up big chopping again. In most cases you will end up with breakage and thinning. Think long and hard before making this permanent choice for your hair.

FIND OUT WHAT RELAXER CHEMICALS DO TO YOUR HAIR.

3)  BAKING SODA

Some naturals use baking soda on their hair to soften it or help to relax their coil. Baking soda is very damaging to your hair. It is abrasive and will lead to damage. It roughs up your hair cuticle and will turn your normal porosity into high porosity in just a few application. Never use baking soda on your hair.

4)  DENMAN BRUSHES

Scraping a brush through your hair wet or dry, roughens up the hair cuticle. Brushing on a consistent basis will lead to damaged hair. Hair will become weak and easy to break. Finger combing is best for your natural coils.

5)  RELYING TO MUCH ON FAKE HAIR

Going natural but consistently covering your hair in fake hair is one of the worst things you can do to your natural hair. Fake hair dries your natural hair out. It also makes people really lazy about taking care of their hair. In many cases you are not washing your hair weekly when you have braid extensions or a weave. Your hair becomes dry from the fake hair then dehydrated due to lack of hydration. Those two issues lead to breakage and excess shedding. Using extensions on occasion is okay. Wearing extensions for more than 6 months out of the year is not a good thing for a healthy hair regimen.

6)  NOT WASHING YOUR HAIR ENOUGH

Hair grows best on a clean scalp. If you are having issues with slow hair growth the first thing to examine is your wash regimen. Hair must be cleaned often. All hair no matter the type get dirty daily. Lots of people with slow hair growth have clogged hair follicles. Clean your hair twice a week or no less than once per week. Washing your hair only once every two weeks or once per month is not a healthy practice.

7)  NOT HAVING A REGIMEN

The biggest mistake you can make is not having a consistent hair care regimen. No matter what your goal is in life, you need to have a plan, a guide. If you want to have long healthy hair, you need a good hair care regimen. If you are lost and do not know where to begin, then you would benefit from hair growth coaching.

Electric straightening brushes on Afro hair

I am sure you have seen the various heat straightening brushes advertised. The claims on these products is that you can straighten your hair faster and safer with these brush tools. The prices range from $19.99 up to $70, depending on the name brand. Certain electric brushes you can use to dry and straighten the hair at one time. This eliminate the need to blow dry your hair first.

How does a electric straightening brush differ from your flat iron?

In general these electric brushes do not get as hot as a flat iron can. You can expect more of a blown out look than a slick straightening, when use on wet hair.

Is this a tool you should use on your hair or your child's hair?

No, I do not recommend investing in this type of hair tool. If you are trying to grow your hair long, full and healthy stay away from brushes and high heat. The stress of the brush raking over your hair, combined with the high heat, will break your hair. With one use or repeated use you could thin your hair out or weaken your hair. This tool is not conducive to growing and maintaining long healthy hair.

All  harsh heat tools should used in moderation, when on a healthy hair journey. If you are still tempted and feel one of these straightening brushes will benefit you, then here are the top picks from amazon.

These straightening brushes received great reviews on amazon. Check them out!

Five top reasons for chronic split ends

Split ends happen to all on occasion, however chronic split ends are not normal. You must cut a split hair. You cannot heal split ends. You can temporarily glue them together with treatments. Once hair splits, it is split. You cut it off, or it will continue to rip.

1. No regular trim schedule
A  good hair care regimen should include a trimming schedule. You decide how often you will trim based on what you do to your hair. The Coily Queens Regimen recommends trimming your hair every 4th month. This equals three times a year. This is if you start out with totally healthy ends. When you trim you hair on a regular basis, your hair styles better and does not pop and break as much.

HEAT STRAIGHTENING
2. Using the wrong tools
Your ends will  split easily if you use flat irons, curling irons, blow dryers or pressing combs. Heat from these sources, dries the hair out. Because you are trying to maintain your straight style, you are not moisturizing it properly, and that dries it out even more.  Harsh direct heat also weakens the protein bonds. Your hair is made of lots of layers that protect it, heat weakens those cuticle layers. When any of those layers become weak, your hair will split and eventually break.

Using brushes and combs also weakens the hair bonds. It does it slower than harsh heat. If you use a brush even once a week, your ends will start to thin. The thinning is from the hair splitting and breaking. The end result is thin see through ends, which makes your hair hard to style. Using combs and brushes always require you to cut more inches off when it is time for your trim. The CQR recommends finger combing. Finger combing will save your hair.

3. Eat more protein
All hair is made up of mostly protein. Thus you must eat sufficient protein daily to keep the hair growing from your scalp strong. Include protein rich foods in your diet daily, foods such as: fish, nuts, beans are healthy proteins. Animal proteins build the strongest hair. Taking a hair growth supplement helps the hair to grow stronger and faster. Most of us are not getting a balanced diet daily, so supplement help to make up for diet.

Including:  Herbal Essence, Dove, Garnier Frutics
4. Using harsh ingredients
Cheap products that include cheap ingredients, sit on your hair and weakens your hair cuticle. Yes many of them give you good immediate results. Most of them are filled with harsh cheap ingredients and silicones. You receive great results when you first use the product, but long term use only leads to dried out damaged hair. Stay away from those products, the cheap price and empty promises are not worth it.

5. No protein treatments
You fail to include good protein treatments in your regimen on a regular basis. Many naturals, in error, feel they are protein sensitive. This is due to what they have read on hair forums. Your hair is protein so you are not sensitive to it. In most cases you have used the protein incorrectly or used the wrong protein product. Not all protein treatments are created equal. Look for a protein treatment that has hydrolyzed keratin protein in the top 5 ingredients. There are other types of proteins, but the animal proteins are the strongest. They give your hair the most strength. If you are going for beyond bra strap length, up your protein game!

July New Moon Phase trimming dates for increased hair growth

New Moon Phase Trimming
>>>As the moon grows into a full moon it gives off different levels of energy. Trimming your hair on the right high energy day, will stimulate your hair growth rate. Many find that their hair grows back much longer. So if your hair normally grows 1/4 of an inch each month you could get 1/2 or 1 inch of new growth.

Benefits of healthy ends:
Hair styles easier
Hair snags and breaks less
Detangles quicker
Faster wash days
Minimized knots

Practice healthy hair habits to keep your ends healthy. You also need a regular trim schedule. How often you trim largely depends on what you do to your hair and your care regimen.

Practices which require you to trim often:
Flat ironing
Blow drying
Brushing the hair
Hair color
Combing hair improperly

Hair is a fiber and just like most fibers it becomes worn and weakened over time. This is not a major issue if you maintain a healthy trim regimen. Trimming your hair every 4th month is usually enough to grow long lengths but still keep your ends looking great.

If you start your regimen in July with a healthy cut, then you will trim again in  October, then again in February, then again in June. Whichever month you do your first cut in, then mark every 4th month from that month as your trim schedule.

Writing down a goal holds you to that goal.

Choose your high energy day within your trim month. I release the best days to trim each month, usually a week before the first high energy trim date for the month. Be subscribed in order to get the notifications.

Never  heard of New Moon Phase trimming? But you would like to know more?

Mark your calendars for your trim date.

How to reduce heat damage when straightening your Afro hair.

Heat straightening, dehydrated hair is one of the top reasons, naturals get heat damage. Never ever straighten your hair, if you are having frequent dry hair issues. Consistently dry hair is vulnerable to damage. Hydrate and condition your hair 3 weeks prior to flat ironing or pressing your hair. Simply deep conditioning your hair the day before you plan to heat straighten is not enough protection.

There is always a risk of  heat damage, when you chose to flat iron or press your hair. Your chances increase when you receive a professional flat iron or straightening. Why? Because the higher the heat the more likely the damage. Professional heat tools are more effective but also harsher on the hair. The stylist's job is to get your hair straight and give you a style which will last a week or more. Remember this when you decide to get a professional straightening.

What about heat protectants?
You should invest in a silicone based heat protectant. When  using harsh heat on your hair, that is not the time to use natural  heat protectants. You want to use a product that will give you the most protection. Silicones stick to the hair and help to protect the hair during the heat straightening.
