How to use tea tree oil in your regimen

How to use Tea Tree oil in your hair care regimen

1. Tea Tree Oil-Enhanced Shampoo

How to Use:

Mix It In: Add 3–5 drops of tea tree oil to your regular shampoo (about 8 ounces).

Why: This slightly scented, diluted mixture harnesses tea tree oil’s antimicrobial and antifungal properties without overwhelming your scalp.

How Often: Use this blend every time you wash your hair to help maintain a clean scalp, reduce dandruff, and prevent product buildup.

2. Scalp Massage Blend

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon of a carrier oil (such as coconut, jojoba, or olive oil)

3–4 drops of tea tree oil

How to Use:

Prepare a Mixture: Combine the tea tree oil with the carrier oil in a small bowl.

Apply: Using your fingertips, gently massage the mixture into your scalp.

Rest: Leave it on for about 15–20 minutes to let your scalp absorb the benefits.

Rinse: Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo.

Why: This method not only calms irritation and reduces dandruff but also boosts circulation to the hair follicles, which can help stimulate hair growth.

3. Leave-In Hair Treatment Spray

Ingredients:

1 cup of distilled water

1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (optional, for extra shine)

3–4 drops of tea tree oil

How to Use:

Mix Well: Combine all the ingredients in a clean spray bottle.

Spritz: After washing your hair, lightly mist your scalp and hair with the solution.

Massage & Dry: Use your fingers to evenly distribute it through your scalp, then style as usual.

Why: This leave-in treatment helps keep the scalp clean and balanced throughout the day while imparting a subtle freshness and helping manage oil.

Important Tips for Using Tea Tree Oil:

Always Dilute: Tea tree oil is very potent. Dilution is essential to prevent irritation on your scalp and skin.

Patch Test: Before applying a new blend to your entire scalp, do a patch test on a small area to ensure you don’t experience an adverse reaction.

Start Small: If you are new to tea tree oil, start with fewer drops and gradually increase the amount as needed while monitoring your scalp’s response.

Consistency is Key: Like many natural remedies, regular use tends to be more beneficial than sporadic application.

By incorporating these methods into your routine, you can enjoy the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and scalp-stimulating benefits of tea tree oil while keeping your hair healthy and vibrant.

Why Cassia Oil is the Holy Grail for Natural Hair Care

Cassia aka Cinnamomum Cassia is made from the dried inner bark of the evergreen tree. It is a powerful treatment for the hair and scalp.

Cassia oil offers several benefits for hair care:

  1. Hydration: Cassia oil’s nourishing properties make it an excellent choice for dry and brittle hair. It can be used in a hydrating hair mask by blending it with a carrier oil and applying it for a deep conditioning treatment.
  2. Frizz Control: Incorporating cassia oil into your hair care routine can help manage frizz, leaving your hair smoother and more manageable.
  3. Scalp Health: Cassia oil has antimicrobial properties that can help soothe the scalp, reducing irritation and promoting a healthier scalp environment.
  4. Strengthening: The oil can help strengthen hair roots, reducing hair fall and promoting overall hair health.

Mix cassia oil with flaxseed oil for a powerful anti-frizz styler.

Cassia oil is typically reddish-brown to golden yellow. It has a strong, spicy aroma similar to cinnamon. It is warming and soothing. Cinnamomum cassia is related to cinnamon, but they are different. Be sure your bottle says Cinnamomum Cassia oil.

Will you be trying this oil? Leave a comment and let me know.

Avocado Oil for Hair Care

Avocado oil is amazing for the hair. It is often overlooked by many naturals. Avocado oil is rich in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and vitamins A, B-5, and E, which promotes hair health.

Hair Strengthener and Detangler

Applying avocado oil onto your hair 3 times a week will strengthen your hair strands and prevent breakage. It also will reduce your shampoo time by making detangling easier.

Stimulates Blood Flow

Massaging avocado oil onto your scalp stimulates blood flow and unclogs blocked follicles, potentially aiding in hair growth. It reduces dandruff by hydrating the scalp.

Massage pure avocado oil into your scalp.

Use avocado oil as a carrier for essential oils (add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oils like lavender or tea tree oil).

Twist your hair with avocado oil to preserve moisture and prevent breakage.

Breakage and Splits

Dry hair becomes broken hair. The minerals in avocado oil help seal cuticle cells, mitigating hair breakage and split ends.

Avocado and Honey Hair Masque Deep Conditioner

1/4 cup of coconut cream

1/4 cup of raw honey

2 tablespoons of cold pressed avocado oil

Lather all of hair and scalp with this masque. Cover with a plastic cap and put on a thermal heating cap for ten minutes. Rinse out with cool water and follow up with an all-natural leave in conditioner.

New Natural Hair Terms You Should Know

Coily Queens Hair terms you should know

1. Webbing: Hair strands sticking together when being separated. The strands stick together forming a webbing effect. This causes tangles and makes your style frizzy.

"Try separating a small section of your hair. Does the hair stick together?"

2. Peel apart affect: When your hair separates easily with no resistance, from the tips to the roots. When there is no resistance your twist outs do not have a lot of frizz and you have more curl definition.

The Crescendo Twist out methods help you create this awesome pull apart effect. Read about it here Read about it here.

3. Oil therapy: Using oils that are specific to your hair needs. Applying them 3 times a week, followed by 10-minute scalp massages.

Hair myths part 3

Braids can give you a break from incorrect manipulation.
Thus helping you "retain" more length.

1. Hair extensions makes your hair grow faster.
False
Hair growth happens under your scalp. No type of weaves or braids can make your hair grow faster. Blood circulation, nutrients and a healthy hair root is what makes your hair grow. This is a commonly shared myth.

2. You need to straighten or blow out Afro hair in order to trim it properly.
False
Straightening or blow drying your hair before getting braids is a bad move for hair. Heat sucks all moisture from the hair. Then letting the fake hair sit on top of your dry hair for weeks, causes a lot of breakage. This is partly why most comb so much hair out, after they remove extensions. A good braider should be about to braid your Afro hair in its natural state.

3. If you have low porosity hair, you cannot use butters or certain products.
False
Porosity does not dictate the types of oils or butters one can use. Most of the oils and butters sit on top of  all hair. Most times the molecular structure of the butter or oil is to big to penetrate any hair strand. To keep build up from happening, be sure to wash your hair once or twice a week.

Water molecules can get around oils and butters.

Hear from a Chemist.

4. The Sink Float test will tell you, your hair porosity.
False
There is a commonly shared test within the natural hair community. This test involves putting a strand of hair in a cup of water. Depending on whether your hair sinks or floats, dictates  if you are high or low porosity. This test is not accurate. So do not base your hair regimen around it and wrongly label your hair.

Do hair vitamins work?

I RECEIVED THIS QUESTION  ON FACEBOOK

"I am currently taking
Hair skin and nail vitamins, collagen,
Gelatin, garlic oil, and using regular castor oil sweet almond oil, shea butter and vics vapor rub in my hair and it's working. My hair is getting. Thicker but no length yet. Am I on the right track?"

WHAT MAKES HAIR THICK?
None of the items she mentions can make your hair thicker. Hair thickness is determined in the womb. We are born with a set amount of hair follicles. We can lose hair follicles but we cannot grow more. Hair thickness is also determined by how wide your individual hair strands are. The size of your hair strands and the number of hair follicles you have are established at birth based on genetics.

Let's breakdown what she is using

Hair vitamins
Vitamins do not give you larger strands or additional hair follicles. They do help feed the body nutrients, you might be lacking. By taking up the slack from your diet, vitamins make the hair grow better and stronger.
One of the vitamins I take. You can buy this HERE

Another vitamin I take. Buy HERE

Castor oil
Castor oil coats the hair and makes it appear to be thicker. So applying castor oil often for weeks builds up on the hair. Once you wash the castor oil off, you are left with your normal thickness. Castor oil is anti fungal. It prevents fungus and eliminates fungus off the scalp. Once that issue is removed the hair grows and flourishes. Keep in mind that you may not have a fungus. Cold pressed castor oil is still an excellent oil for the hair. It is an awesome conditioner for the hair.

Vick's vapor rub
This product is made up of petroleum. It also coats the hair and makes it "appear" thicker. However it cannot make your hair thicker. The clove, eucalyptus oils stimulate better blood flow and this leads to increased hair growth. It is possible that Vick's can also increase hair growth by eliminating certain scalp issues that hinder hair growth. I am not endorsing this product for hair growth. This is simply my response to her question.

Side note:
The properties of the Vick's healed my scalp quickly. I developed some scabs on my scalp. I could not pinpoint the cause of the scabs. I will say this happens to my scalp every few years or so. I decided to give the Vicks a go. The scabs cleared up within 3 days. quickly.

So why is she "only" seeing thickness with her hair growing regimen?

When Afro hair grows from the scalp it makes all the hair look thicker. She sees thickness due to the new growth. Since Afro hair grows curly, it grows up not down. Thus you will notice fullness before you notice length. You cannot have an increase in fullness without gaining new growth.

Tracking your growth to remain motivated
Would you like to know how well your growth aids are working? Before you begin, measure your hair in 3 areas. Use a tape measure. Note the condition of your hair, so you can have your hair in the same state when you measure for results.  Write the measurements on a calendar. Measure again in 40 days.  Continue to measure your length every 30 days. Tracking your growth will give you confidence to stay consistent with your journey.

Powerful oil blend for faster hair growth

Oils derived from plants and nuts, can greatly increase your hair growth as well as strengthen your strands. The key is learning to use the right combination of oils to nourish your hairs needs. The Omega 369 oil is created from 3 very powerful nuts.

This is a perfect oil blend for the Summer or those who live in hot climates. When you purchase each oil be sure they are unrefined and cold pressed. This is the only way to reap the amazing benefits of this blend of  fatty acids.

With so many wonderful oils, how do I know this oil blend is the one for me?
Should I invest in this oil?

Does it appear that your hair has stopped growing?
Do you have issues with inflammation?
Auto immune disease?
Are you taking medications which seems to dry your hair out?
Does your hair stay hard no matter what you do?
Are you currently dealing with hair loss and do not know the root cause?

If two or more above statements are true for you, this oil blend could turn your slow hair growth or dry hair around.

Remember to consider any medications you take, when using a new product.

This easy recipe makes 3 ounces. Massage 1 to 2 tbsp of this oil onto your scalp, then smooth over your hair strands. Use daily during the Summer months then every other day during the rest of the seasons. Inflamed hair roots are a top cause of slow growth and hair loss. This potent blend of omega fatty acids reduces inflammation on the scalp.

Teas for hair strengthening and growth

Tea infusions are excellent for strengthening the hair roots, stimulating hair follicles and providing moisture. Create tea infusions from good quality tea leaves, filtered water and good quality essential oils. The longer you steep your tea the stronger the infusion. Choose the tea leaves which address your current hair needs.

Rosemary-Bay leaf hair tea benefits
  • Adds strength to the hair base, thus reducing breakage
  • Increases hair growth by stimulating better blood flow to the scalp
  • Use after braiding to reduce the amount of sheds hairs when you remove braids.

How to use as a tea rinse

After cleansing and conditioning, pour this hair tea over your hair. Do not rinse out, nor towel dry. With hair still soaking wet apply your leave in conditioner and other style products. This rinse can be used once a week if desired.

How to use as a braid spray

Gently massage scalp for 5 to 10 minutes. Then spray entire scalp, enough to make it damp. Lightly spray over the length of each braid. Do not soak the hair, unless it is shampoo day.   Repeat these steps every other day, which equals 3 times a week.

CQ Hair Growth & Strengthening Tea

RECIPE
Hibiscus tea (1 tbsp)
Green tea (1 tbsp)
Nettle tea (1 tbsp)
Glycerin (2 tbsp)
12 ounces spring water
Lavender essential oil (1 tsp)

WHO SHOULD USE THIS TEA?
Those wearing braid extensions benefit a great deal from this tea blend. The nettle, hibiscus and green tea add strength to your hair roots. This helps protect your natural hair from the friction of the fake hair swinging back and forth throughout the day. The hibiscus and glycerin feeds the hair moisture, so it does not pop and break. Nettle and lavender are excellent for boosting hair growth.

LESS SHRINKAGE FOR TWIST OUTS
Use this tea to set your twist outs. Apply to freshly washed hair and seal in with a little grease or castor oil. You will get good definition with less shrinkage than using a creamy product.

Use this spray as often as you desire.
Store in the fridge when not in use.
Works well when applied to hair cold.

Beginners tips to increasing your hair growth

Do you feel like your hair is growing slow?

Have you been on a hair journey for at least a year, yet you are not gaining much length? Are you not reaching your length goals? Here is a list of basic tips you should follow in order to increase your hair growth rate and retention.

Do not base your hair growth on anyone else but yourself. Never judge your hair journey based on another's journey. Hair grows on average 1/2 inch per month. Some people gain more and others less. In order to know whether your hair is truly growing slowly. You must know your HGR, hair growth rate. To learn how to determine your HRG, read here.

Full details on each tip BELOW!

HAIR GROWTH CHECKLIST FOR BEGINNERS

1. Cleansing your hair once a week.
Do you know that clogged hair follicles is one of the top causes for slow hair growth? Many think their hair naturally grows slow. In reality, it is their hair care habits, not genetics, that is keeping them from their length goals. Hair collects dirt, germs, pollutants and product build up on a daily basis. Hair grows best from a clean scalp. Cleanse your hair with a non sulfate shampoo, clay wash or formulated cleanser on a weekly basis. Never let all those germs lay on your scalp longer than a week.

2. Deep conditioning each time you wash your hair.
Deep conditioning helps to keep your hair soft and with less tangles. This makes the hair easier to manage. Well conditioned hair does not break easily. Less breakage means you retain more length and reach your hair goals faster. Deep condition using heat for at least 20 minutes.

Coily Queens deep conditioner recommendations:
Shea Moisture intensive manuka honey DC
Shea Moisture 10 n 1 conditioner masque
TGIN honey deep conditioner
Mielle Babassu deep conditioner
As I am hydration elation

3. Stop using combs and brushes.
Combs and brushes snap and break curly hair. Those tools might make styling easier but they are not necessarily needed to manage your curly hair. Stop using combs and brushes and you will see a big difference in 30 days. You will retain more length.

4. Detangle hair using fingers only.
Replace your combs and brushes with your fingers. Finger combing might take time to become use to, but the benefits will amaze you. Following all the tips here will give you healthy hair. Healthy hair is easy to finger detangle.
Finger combing tips.

5. Stop flat ironing, heat straightening and blow drying.
If you want to retain length and keep your hair hydrated, you must stop the direct heat. Direct heat includes: pressing, flat ironing, brush straighteners and blow dryers.

6. Massage scalp for ten minutes every other day.
The scalp is a muscle and muscles become stiff. Muscles thrive on stimulation. Take your time and massage for at least 10 minutes in order to reap the benefits. Massage stimulates better blood circulation. The blood carries the nutrients into the hair roots. This makes hair growth happen at the hair root. Massage, exercise and healthy eating, make hair growth happen.

GIVE YOUR HAIR GROWTH A BOOST!! NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE

7. Apply a stimulating oil blend onto scalp before each massage.
Stimulating oil blends greatly improves scalp circulation. When combined with massage it takes your stimulation to another level. Mix 3 to 7 drops of stimulating oil with one tablespoon of carrier oil. Smooth onto scalp with fingers and massage  for ten minutes.

8. Take a hair growth vitamin daily.
Most people do not receive the right amount of nutrients daily. When the body does not receive enough nutrients daily, many times, the hair being non vital will suffer. Supplements help to take up the slack, for what is lacking in one's diet. Thus taking the right hair growth supplement can keep your hair growth from being stagnant.

9. Drink 64 ounces of water daily.
The body is made up of mostly water. We lose water daily. Therefore we must replenish the body of water so that it works at its optimum level. Water helps the body to produce sebum. Sebum greatly keeps the hair in optimum condition.

10. Use a leave in conditioner, that contains all natural ingredients.
The leave in conditioner is the most important product in your regimen. This is the product that sits on your hair all day. It gives you continuous conditioning throughout the day. What goes on your hair will eventually seep into the scalp. Therefore you want healthy ingredients to seep into your body. You receive more moisturizing benefits when you use products that are as natural as possible.

Stay tuned for the advanced hair growth checklist. Before the advanced checklist tips can work, you must first be doing the above hair growth tips.

Coconut Hair Care

The coconut  is an amazing fruit. On top of its amazing health benefits it is one of the best treats for your hair. The best way to use coconut in your hair care is by using it in a cold pressed oil form. It is also beneficial in the form of juice, cream or milk.

HAIR GROWTH FORMULA
PRE-SHAMPOO TREATMENT HELPS DETANGLE AND PROTECT HAIR FROM BREAKAGE DURING SHAMPOOING

Coconut oil is part of a select few oil that penetrate the hair shaft. While most oils sit on top of the hair, coconut oil penetrates into the hair shaft by 50%. It contains lauric acid. Lauric acid has a low molecular weight, so it can infuse the hair strands. This gives your hair strands extra strength to better withstand damage from combing or brushing. Broken spaces on your hair strands are filled in and this keeps the hair from breaking so easily.

In order to receive the strengthening benefits of the coconut oil, it must sit on your hair for 16 plus hours. If you are using coconut oil for protection against hydral fatigue or breakage, it is best to lubricate your hair, cover with a plastic cap overnight for at least 16 hours.

Coconuts are full of fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Great for deep conditioning. Apply to hair, cover with plastic conditioning cap under heat for 20 minutes.

Leave in conditioner/Braid spray

Regular use of cold pressed coconut oil will make your hair follicles healthy. It kills viruses and fungus on your scalp. Regular treatment of coconut oil strengthens your hair and gives it great sheen.

Use coconut oil on your school age child's hair. It repels lice and keeps the eggs from attaching to your hair follicles.

Five ways to prevent breakouts when taking biotin

Biotin is a great supplement for hair growth. Biotin is also called vitamin B7 or vitamin H.   Many people experience an increase in their hair growth, after taking biotin for few months. Biotin is also great for the skin, however some people experience breakouts while taking it.

If you are one of those who love biotin but experience breakouts, then I have 5 helpful tips for you.

A possible problem with biotin may be that it  increases your sebum production and the sebum clogs your pores. Sebum is our best moisturizer, however in excess it can cause breakouts. Makeup, lotions and dirt gets trapped inside the pore, along with the sebum and that creates acne. This happens when your cleansing regimen is not removing all the dirt daily.

TIPS TO COMBAT BREAKOUTS FROM BIOTIN

1. Drink 64 ounces of water daily.

2. Cleanse your face twice a day and be sure to cleanse well. Going over your face with an astringent or toner after cleansing will let you know if you have removed all residue.

3. Do a bentonite clay masque once or twice a week. The bentonite clay sucks dirt, toxins and product from your pores. Clean pores are the key to no breakouts.

My recipe (simple is best when cleaning your pores)
1/2 tsp bentonite clay
1/2 tsp of red clay
1/2 tsp of organic apple cider vinegar
1/2 tsp of filtered water
(mix together until creamy, adding additional drops  of water   as needed, spread on clean skin, let dry,      then rinse)

4. Drink nettle tea daily. Nettle tea helps to remove toxins from your body and helps with hair growth. Just add one nettle tea bag to your cup of green or black tea and sip away!

5. Drink 8 ounces of water each time you take your supplement.

How much biotin should you take a day?

That is for you to decide. Some people know from experience with the vitamin the maximum they can take daily. There is no set amount which is better for hair growth. It depends on your body. Any vitamin you take, you must consider any other medications you take and inform your doctor.

I take ten thousand mcg, when I am not taking a regular hair skin and nail supplement. I always rotate my supplements.
My rotation goes something like this
3 months Liquid Gold HSN vitamins (capsules)
3 months Mineral Rich liquid vitamin (a B complex)
   3 months 10,000 mcg biotin with a women's one a day

It is best to take a multi vitamin unless you have a deficiency in a particular vitamin.
