What is your scalp health?

Many people deal with issues of dry itchy scalp and slow hair growth, partly because of impaired sebum production due to age, diet and health. Oiling your scalp daily stimulates  our own sebum to produce more effectively. Your hair needs lubrication to thrive. A diet full of foods rich in vitamin A and C will give you healthy sebum production. So it is not just what we put on top of our hair but what we put inside our bodies.

Is it time to give your grocery list a makeover?

Check out this list of foods rich in vitamins A and C, make a list of the foods you like from this list and eat them daily.

Liver: (chicken or beef) a serving contains 150% of the daily value (DV). And if you are thinking of substituting cod liver oil in place of eating liver, then know that a teaspoon of cod liver oil has on 10% of the daily value. Not a whole lot.

Sweet Potatoes: per one cup of mashed sweet potatoes you get 760% DV. Sweet potatoes pack a punch of vitamin A.

Carrots: 1 medium carrot contains 204% DV and 3 baby carrots contain about 123% of the daily value. SO EAT MORE CARROTS!!!!!!!!!!

Dark leafy greens: 1 cup of kale contains 206% DV fresh or steamed. Turnips 232% DV. Mustard greens 210% DV. Spinach 189% DV. Collards 133% DV.

Butternut squash: 450% DV per one cup! WOW!!!!!!!!

Dried herbs: Parsley, basil, dill and oregano. Sprinkle these on your food daily.

Lettuce: Dark colorful lettuces contain 42% DV per cup of shredded lettuce.

Dried Apricots

Cantalope: contains 120% of daily value of Vitamin A per cup of melon balls.

Pick the foods that you like from this list and start adding them into your diet in a big way. In no time your hair will be more lubricated and your hair growth will increase by 50%. You will also save on product because you can apply less oil to your hair, due to your own sebum increase.

Oiling your scalp daily makes black hair grow longer

Some believe that straight hair grows faster and longer, because when the sebaceous gland release sebum it is able to freely travel down the hair strand to the tip and this sebum lubricates and moisturizes the hair and keeps it from breaking.

One theory is that Afro hair, because the hair follicle is shaped curvy and our hair grows out in a spiral coil, that the sebum when released has a problem traveling down the hair strand to moisturize the hair. So the very nature of Afro hair is dry because of this and this is what keeps us from achieving as long lengths as those with straight hair. I do not necessarily agree with this theory, because Father God does not make any mistakes and He made our coily hair and it works just fine. I think it is more so geographic and some other things but that I will save for another forum discussion.

So let me go with the theory that sebum has an problem traveling down our hair shaft. If this is true then one way to make your hair reach greater lengths is by oiling your scalp daily. I do know from experience that this makes a HUGE difference in your hair. So I guess growing up our parents had it half way right, with the oiling the hair practice, but we were just using the wrong product.

I started oiling my scalp daily as an experiment and I was pleasantly surprised to find that my hair did not shed, has no ssks and is just overall easier to manage. I have also noticed my hair grows much faster. So if you are looking for a solution to some of your hair issues, start today with oiling your scalp/hair daily. This only works if you use natural oils such as: extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil or castor oil. Using natural oils will keep you from getting a buildup on your scalp. When you use oils that penetrate, not only is it feeding your hair roots but it is not clogging your hair follicles.

If you are experiencing extra shedding, tangles, dry scalp or slow growth, I recommend to try oiling your scalp daily as an experiment for the next 30 days and keep a hair diary of how your hair reacts and which oil you opted to use.
