How to be shampoo free!

How to cleanse your hair without using shampoo.

God created our hair to withstand exposure to the elements. Thus your hair can take being washed frequently, without becoming damaged. Hair, skin and nails are made up of the keratin. We  do not think twice about washing our body daily. Yet the average black woman thinks that washing Afro hair to often, will damage it. Some act as though, Afro hair is so delicate that it cannot withstand much manipulation.

Cleansing the hair does not harm it. Cleansing it with the wrong shampoo or cleanser is what causes damage. Not conditioning well after we cleanse, also causes damage. Not the washing by itself. It is important to cleanse your hair at least twice a week. This will rid the hair of germs, viruses and fungi. Hair grows best on a clean scalp.

NON SHAMPOO OPTIONS Although there are many non-sulfate shampoos on the market. Some people are not fond of shampoo. You do have other choices. Here are some of the natural cleansers I recommend to replace your traditional shampoo.

Clay:
I recommend bentonite clay or red clay. It is best to use them together. But you can also use them separately. If your hair is prone to excessive knots, tangles and dryness. Replacing your shampoo with clay is the way to go. Clay cleanses, conditions and defines your coils in one step. For a DIY clay recipe and full information about clay, go HERE.

Hibiscus powder
Hibiscus is a gentle cleanser. If you use gel, grease or heavy oils, this might not cleanse enough for you. Add some spring or distilled water to pure hibiscus powder. Add a little at a time. You want to create a paste. Rinse your hair under warm water for 30 seconds. Apply hibiscus paste to scalp and gently massage. Smooth the paste over each hair strand. Cover with a plastic cap for 10 minutes. Rinse well with med temp water. Continue with deep conditioning. Do not use on blonde or light color hair.  It might change the color.

Soapwarts
This one is great for dandruff and itchy scalp. It is also a gentle cleanser. It is a natural cleanser that suds. But it is not harsh like bar soaps. It has a light earthy smell. Buy it in a powder form. Create a paste with distilled water. Wash hair with it and follow with deep conditioning. Find it at health food stores or HERE.

Black soap
This is an excellent all natural cleanser for the whole body. It softens, cleanses and conditions the hair, amazingly. It is cheap and long lasting. Be sure to buy only authentic black soap. MORE INFO HERE

Carefully selecting specific natural high quality oils for your hair type and hair issue. Massaging those oils onto your scalp for 10 minutes daily. Being sure your hair strands are  lubricated daily with the right high quality oils. Done correctly, it will eliminate your single strand knots, greatly reduce tangles and increase your hair growth rate.

Red Palm Oil is a new addition to the Coily Queens Regimen.

Check out the amazing benefits this oil provides for your hair.

FIND RED PALM OIL HERE

I started using red palm oil last year. I purchased my jar from a high end grocery store; it was an impulse buy. My palm oil is unrefined, organic and comes in a dark glass jar. Red palm oil is full of vitamins A and E, and is knows as a super food. When purchasing any type of organic oil, you need to use it consistently. Organic oils are made to be used and not  stored. Even though I used it 3 times a week,my jar expired before I was half way finished. Check your expiration dates before you pay for it. Red palm oil is very rich  and a little goes a long way.

Red palm oil is great to use right after your shampoo regimen, because it locks in moisture so well. Consistent use will reverse your gray hair and correct  hair loss.  Red palm oil is full of carotene and lycopene and this prevents your hair from becoming weak or brittle. Full of saturated fats and lipids makes it a perfect moisturizer for the hair and skin.

PROS:
Super hair growth
Decreases your gray hair
Prevents hair loss
Strengthens hair
Revitalizes your skin and prevents wrinkles
Contains a high amount of vitamins A and E, more than any other plant oil.
Great replacement for coconut oil
Less than $1 per ounce, great price!
BUY HERE!

CONS:
This oil is a bright orange color. Some people feel the oil is messy and stains. Personally I do not find the oil messy. I always wear a scarf if I use it at bedtime. As with all oils I measure out my oil, instead of just eyeballing it. I use the finger dip method instead of pouring it from a applicator bottle. Taking these measures ensures that you do not over oil your hair. It does not stain my clothes, pillows or furniture.

How to correct rough puffy hair ends and knots

Does your hair form knots no matter what product your try?

Do you spend time untangling your hair, only for tangles to reform within minutes upon finishing?

Do your ends always feel rough?
Are your ends puffy when you braid or twist your hair?

Are you plagued by bothersome single strand knots?

If you answered yes to any of these questions this article will help you solve your problem.

Common complaint:
My hair forms knots if I just look at it. I wash my hair, deep condition it and keep it twisted, but still my hair forms knots when I remove the twists. Even when I press my hair using various methods my ends stay puffy and hard. What is wrong with my hair?

Should I get a trim?
Not so fast, trimming your hair may not solve your problem. Before you proceed to cut off unnecessary length, do a test patch.  Take a 1/2 of an inch section of your hair and cut it below the frizz line. Cut from the section right by your earlobe on the corners, at the top of the sideburns area.  Examine whether the hair still forms knots or puffiness after you have cut below the frizz line. If after your test cut your hair still knots up then you know you suffer from a hair cuticle issue that will not be solved by a trim.

What is a hair cuticle issue?
Your hair cuticle is the outer layer of your hair, which is  made of scales and several layers. The hair cuticle raises and flattens depending upon the weather, products and health of the hair. A healthy hair cuticle opens when it should and flattens when it should. When the hair cuticle becomes unhealthy it stays open, this is called a raised hair cuticle or highly porous. You do not want your hair cuticle to stay raised because it loses moisture quickly. A raise hair cuticle is also frizzy, tangled and full of knots.

Repairing the hair cuticle:
If the damage is not deep into the hair cuticle layers, it can be corrected. Using the right PH balanced solution will help the hair cuticle to lay flat and hold moisture. The better hydrated your hair is the less tangles and single strand knots you will have. Applying a simple apple cider organic vinegar rinse  over your hair,  after you rinse out your deep conditioner, will correct a raised cuticle issue.

Correcting your raised hair cuticle problem
Step one: Do a trim patch test as listed above. If your hair still forms knots then proceed to step two. If the cut patch test shows your hair no longer knotting then proceed with giving your entire head a good trim or visit your stylist for a trim.

Step two: Wash your hair with one of the following:  a non sulfate shampoo, conditioning cleanser or mud wash. Deep condition your hair using heat by sitting under the dryer. Rinse the deep conditioner out with cold water. Leave on for 3 minutes, then rinse out with cool water. While hair is still soaking wet, apply your leave in conditioner and style.

You should see a good reduction in knots and puffy ends. If you somehow do not then wait at least 3 days. But this time you can try the ACV treat. After you rinse out your deep conditioner, while hair is still soaking wet pour the ACV treat mix over your hair, saturating all of your hair and scalp. While hair still has the ACV treat in it, apply your leave in conditioner. Blot with a towel and proceed with your styling.

When doing the ACV treat, if you are using a creamy leave in conditioner that masque the scent of the apple cider vinegar. You will also notice that it takes your hair a really long time to dry when doing the ACV treat. Keep that in mind when styling. You should only have to do the ACV treat once. Then you can continue to do the ACV rinse once a week or once a month.

The apple cider vinegar rinse/treat
Purchase organic only
1/4 cup of organic apple cider vinegar
2 cups of filtered or bottle water

Benefits:
Reduces tangles
Makes the hair cuticle lay flat
Gives the hair shine.
Anti bacterial
Anti fungal

AVOCADO OIL is the best for frizzy ends. Smooth over strands after you apply your leave in  conditioner and styler. Purchase pure, virgin, unrefined avocado oil. This is the best and what I use.

The apple cider vinegar will make the hair cuticle lay flat therefore keeping your hair from forming knots. You should notice an immediate significant reduction in tangles and knots. In most cases the ACV rinse eliminates all knots. You can repeat the ACV rinse again in 3 days. For even better results complete the 18 day hydration & lubrication regimen for excessive tangles.

If the ACV rinse does not correct your puffy ends or knots issue, then proceed with the 18 day hydration & lubrication regimen. If your hair is still forming knots and puffy ends, then you could have some deep hair cuticle damage. You can learn to work with it or do a big chop and start over.

Help me moisturize my hair!

Dry brittle hair is the number one hair complaint amongst black women. Some women have a hard time getting their hair to retain moisture for more than one day. Although they use moisturizers, it seems as though their hair soaks up the product and becomes  dry and brittle, hours after application. There are many reasons women experience dry hair issues, the most common reason for dry hair is an unhealthy hair cuticle. Each hair strand is made up of layers, which  look like fish scales. You want these layers (your hair cuticle) to lay flat, so that moisture will seal into your hair strands. When the hair cuticle lays flatter, your hair stays moisturized for longer periods.

The correct way to seal your ends is to get your hair cuticle to lay flatter, this locks moisture into your hair strands.

How you cleanse and condition will dictate how dry your hair will become and how quickly it will dry out. So give your shampoo and conditioning regimen a make over.

Shampooing and conditioning properly
1. Allow medium hot water to run over your hair strands for 2 minutes as you gently smooth your fingers from the scalp to the ends of your hair. Saturate the hair with water really good before you add a non sulfate shampoo or conditioning cleanser.
2. Rinse with medium temp water removing all product. Apply a generous amount of a moisturizing deep conditioner, cover with a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer for 10 to 20 minutes.
3. Begin rinsing the conditioner out with warm water, then switch to cool water. Allow cold water to run over your hair for 2 minutes after rinsing.
4. While hair is still wet apply your leave in conditioner.
5. Blot excess water, style and allow to air dry only.

Using the medium hot water will make your hair cuticle open wider to be cleansed and to receive the moisturizing benefits of your deep conditioning.

The Ultimate Dry Hair Test

So you feel your hair is moisturized properly huh? The ultimate test of properly moisturized hair is to take 2 inches sections of your hair and pull it apart with your fingers. When you separate the hair do you see the hair sticking together? Do you notice what I call the "webbing effect"? Do this throughout different sections of your hair and if you experience webbing then your hair is not properly hydrated. Webbing will continue to make your hair tangle excessively and create single strand knots.

Hydrated hair, creates the best styles and grows the best, therefore hydrated hair should be your healthy hair goal.  In order to maintain maximum hydration your hair cuticle must function properly. Your hair cuticle should open when you need it to and close when you need it to. The majority of the time you want your hair cuticle to lay flatter. Understand that the hair cuticle never completely closes. The weather, your hair products, hair tools, and certain chemicals  you use are just some of the things which greatly affect your hair cuticle. Practice healthy haircare steps to maintain healthy hydrated hair.

Characteristics of  dry (dehydrated) hair:
  • Hair feels hard and sometimes straw like.
  • Your hair styles turn out frizzy.
  • Your twist outs lack definition.
  • You have no coil pattern
  • You have single strands knots on a daily basis.
  • Hair lacks sheen and body.
  • Hair is hard to manipulate
  • It feels rough when you rub your hands through it.
  • You experience breakage daily.
  • You have a hard time retaining longer lengths.

Characteristics of hydrated properly moisturized hair:
  • The hair is soft and flexible.
  • Hair coils are more defined.
  • The hair styles better.
  • Hair keeps styles for a longer time.
  • You do not need to apply a creamy moisturizer daily.
  • You do not need to spritz with water daily.
  • Hair grows better.
  • Hair retains more length.
  • When you run your finger up and down the hair shaft it feels smooth.
  • Hair has sheen and a deeper richer color.
  • Your hair does not snap and pop when you manipulate it.
  • You have less hair shedding.

Do not waste time on the LOC method or the LCO method these methods are not necessary. You need to get your hair cuticle to lay flatter that is your goal, not piling products on top of  your hair. The Loc or LCO method gives you a false sense of moisturized hair.

Does your hair tangle excessively no matter what you do to it?

Do you constantly have to deal with single strand knots?

Does your hair develop tangles within minutes of you untangling it?

Is your hair journey being hindered by excessive tangles?

If any of these questions or situations apply to your hair, this regimen will help get you on the way to healthier hair. Excessive tangles and single strand knots come from hair that is not properly moisturized or lubricated. Do not accept the incorrect information that Afro coily hair tangles a lot that is its nature. While our coily curly hair does tangle, it should not tangle excessively nor should it continuously get single strand knots. So do not accept that untruth. If your hair is properly hydrated and lubricated you will not develop tangles within minutes of untangling your who head. You will find help here, the regimen below will greatly decrease your tangles and eliminate single strand knots, once the regimen is followed for 18 days.. Everyday on the regimen, the hair becomes softer and supple, with the first improvements  within 5 days of starting this regimen..

( Decreases hair tangles and eliminates single strand knots)

(all items above can be purchased at the grocery store, except the red clay and the coconut oil needs to be unrefined)
Be sure you use the items listed no substitutions each of these products have a function that is needed to give you the best outcome. Do not use grocery store plastic bags on your hair purchase a large pack of conditioning caps from the beauty supply store.

Pre- clay wash treatment
Melts tough tangles

This pre shampoo treatment is only done at the beginning of the regimen. This is your first step before you begin day one.   Purchase a bottle of TRESemme' Smooth and Silky conditioner, from Walmart or Target.  In a bowl mix a generous amount of the conditioner with one tablespoon of coconut oil and one tablespoon of grape seed oil, apply through out your hair in sections untangling as you go. For best results cover with a plastic cap and allow to sit on hair overnight or no less than 3 hours. When you remove the cap you will notice that your tangles just melt apart. Rinse hair with warm water and proceed with clay wash for day 1c.

18-day regimen
Day one:
A.  Mix 1 tablespoon of grapeseed oil with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and rub into hair and untangle. Cover with plastic cap and leave on overnight or at least 3 hours.
B.  Rinse oil out with warm water.
C.  Cleanse  hair with the clay wash, smooth through hair and scalp, cover with a plastic cap for 10 minutes. Rinse out clay thoroughly using medium/hot water.
D.  deep condition by mixing, 1 cup of coconut cream concentrate with 1/4 cup of honey, cover with a plastic cap and sit under hooded dryer for 20 minutes. Rinse out with cool/cold water, rinse well.
E.  Mix 2 cups of spring water with 1/2 cup of ACV and apply all the ACV rinse to hair for 3 minutes then rinse with cool
water.
F.   Apply leave in conditioner while hair is still soaking wet.
G.  Apply one tablespoon of coconut oil and style.
Day two:
Massage coconut oil into your scalp and smooth through your hair. Start with 1 tablespoon, then add more only if needed.
Keep hair stretched and untangled
apply more leave in conditioner.
Day three: Repeat Day two steps, only apply leave in conditioner if needed.
Day four:   Repeat day two steps again
Day five: CLAY WASH DAY AGAIN! Repeat all the steps from day one.
Day six:  Massage 1 tablespoon of coconut oil into your scalp and hair strands and apply leave in conditioner and style.
Day seven: Repeat day 6 steps.
Day eight: Repeat day 6 steps again
Day nine:  Go back to day one and repeat the regimen again.

When you have repeated the regimen the second time you should notice drastic improvement in your hair. Now  start doing the Coily Queens regimen which puts you back with washing your hair with a non sulfate shampoo or conditioning cleanser. You will now do clay washes once per month. Now you have a complete regimen that eliminates knots, decreases your tangles and increases the hair growth rate.

2-strand twist out

Important: When you mix the clay powder, do not use any type of metal, so mix in a plastic bowl with a wooden spoon. Metal destroys the minerals which are in the clay. You want the clay wash to be a thick creamy consistency, not to runny otherwise it will be messy.

Single Strand Knots!

You can prevent single strand knots from forming!

If you are natural, stretching your relaxer or transitioning from relaxed to natural, then more likely than not you are dealing with tangles, these tangles lead to single strand knots. Now I have seen many natural gurus say that tightly coily hair or type 4 hair is just prone to tangles and knots. That is just the nature of tightly coily hair. That is not true! Tangles and knots are the result of dehydrated hair. If you hair continues to be lacking moisture, then that hair will eventually snap and pop.

Prevention is always better than cure!

That being true,  the CoilyQueens Regimen, when followed on a regular basis, will eliminate your single strand knots and greatly reduce the amount of tangles you get. Just because your hair is tightly coily does not mean you have to deal with excess tangles and single strand knots. The CoilyQueens Regimen uses hydration and lubrication to eliminate your single strand knots and reduce your tangles.

As you can see with my tightly coily long hair one would think I deal with lots of tangles and single strand knots. But thanks to the CoilyQueens method my tangles have decreased and I rarely get a single strand knot. When I do, it is because I forgot to cover my hair at night.

Time to detangle!
Even after getting caught in the rain, when I went to fingercomb this out, it was not as tangled as it might look. The CoilyQueens Regimen made it easier to untangle  my twist out that
got rained out, lol.

So what is the secret to preventing single strand knots???

You apply a natural penetrating oil to your hair daily.
Recommended oil for daily use: extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil or coconut oil
Start with 1 tablespoon and massage oil onto your scalp first.
Massage for 10 minutes to stimulate better hair growth.
When massage is done, smooth the oil throughout the length of  you hair strands.
That is it! Good-bye single strand knots after 7 days of oil therapy.

Healthy lubricated hair handled properly does not get single strand knots.
Dry hair gets single strand knots and tangles easily.
This regimen makes your wash day shorter because there is no need to pre-poo.
You lubricated hair is easy to untangle on shampoo day.

Oil therapy the solution to single strand knots was discovered by CoilyQueensRock.com. This is the only website you will see promote this solution for single strand knots. I discovered this while experimenting with my love of natural oils, so if you read this solution anywhere else they copied me and should give CoilyQueensRock.com credit.

The CoilyQueens Regimen greatly decreases your tangles when you practice oiling daily as recommended. I have followed this regimen for 3 years and my hair rarely gets a single strand knots because I have fewer tangles. If I do get a knot it is easy to untangle with no damage, because my hair is well lubricated and strong. Try the CoilyQueens Regimen today you will not regret it!

Hydration + Lubrication = no more single strand knots

This regimen is great for transitioners also, although I am mostly natural, as you can see from the above picture my bang area has some relaxer on it. About 4 years ago I was wearing a curly sew in so I relaxed the bang area of my hair so it could blend in. I am so glad I did not relax my entire head. I have to give this small area of hair, extra care because of the two textures. The CoilyQueens Regimen makes it easy to untangle when I do get tangles. Because of the lubrication,  I can easily pull them apart with my fingers. I do not have to resort to cutting the knots out. Some might say well, why not just cut your bangs. Well this picture was taken in 2011, so I have cut a small part of my bangs, but I still have some left because it was a large bang. Also because I took care of it so well, I experienced no breakage, you can tell from the picture how healthy it still looks regardless of the relaxer still being there. So because it has not interfered with my daily styling and it is not breaking, I chose not to cut it. The CoilyQueens Regimen has enabled me to not have breakage. This will work out great for long term transitioners.

Start the CoilyQueens Regimen today!

Watch your hair transform!
