Clarifying your hair

Clarifying the hair involves using a stronger than normal cleanser to remove product build up from your hair.
5 REASONS TO CLARIFY:

1.  If you do not wash your hair on a weekly basis

2.  If you use gels on a regular basis

3.  If you use petroleum or silicones, on a regular basis

4.  Clarifying before your protein treatments helps to ensure that the protein adheres to your strands better.

5.  If your hair was styling good then it begins to not style as well, doing a deep cleansing could help to revive your hair.

PLEASE NOTE!
Deep cleansers and clarifyers have a higher PH than your regular shampoos.
Clarifyers cleanse the hair deeply. This includes stripping the hair of its natural oils.
For this reason extra care should be taken to deep condition well after using a clarifying deep cleanser.

Here are my tops pick for clarifying deep cleansers.

Jane Carters Hydrating Invigorating shampoo

Natural choices:
Black soap *(PH 9)
Castile soap *(PH 11)

*the PH is an estimate it depends on how your natural product is created

Top Protein free or low protein hair conditioners

Some people feel their hair is protein sensitive. Therefore they try to afford protein in their hair care products. If you use a hard protein treatment on your hair such as the aphogee 2 step treatment. Then you should watch the amount of protein in your other hair products. Doing so will keep you from creating a build up of protein on your hair.

Think you have protein overload?
No problem!
Good deep cleansing shampoos: Shea Moisture Black soap shampoo, Jane Carter hydrating shampoo, DIY black soap shampoo, DIY Mud Wash

Products which give you moisture for days

How well your hair holds moisture depends on two factors.
1. Health of your hair cuticles
2. The quality of  the product used

In order to lock in moisture your hair must first be moisturized. This means the hair must be wet or the product you use must have water listed first on the bottle. Oils or butters used over dry hair will not moisturize it. The oils and butter will only lubricate and soften the hair. For some people it dries it out even faster. To be sure you have moisturized your hair the best always use a water based product.

A successful hair care regimen will keep your hair moisturized for 3 days before it requires more product. At the beginning of your hair journey you might find that you need to apply a moisturizer/leave in product everyday. But after 3 years of being natural on a good hair care regimen your hair should retain moisture for 3 or more days. If this is not your case, then re-evaluate your hair care regimen and the moisturizers you use.

If you do not have a good hair care regimen, start the CoilyQueens Regimen today. Your hair will thank you.

How to create better twist outs

The twist out is probably the most popular style for naturals.  No matter your curl pattern, the hunt for the perfect twist out is always on. Some people get lucky the first time they create their twist out. But for most naturals it takes several attempts in order to get a desired twist out style. To perfect it takes even longer. But it does not have to be all trial and error. Here are some very helpful tips to help your achieve your best twist out.

12 TIPS FOR BETTER TWIST OUTS

1.  Healthy hair styles the best. Work on the health of your hair first before trying to perfect your twist out. This is very important for new naturals. Trying to create great looking styles on hair that does not retain moisture well, can be very deflating to your natural hair joy.

Need a good regimen to whip your hair into better shape?
Start today on the Coily Queens Regimen

2. Find a great style product. You want a product to give you hold and moisture, without flaking. Start with a style cream. Here are some winners: As I am double butter cream, SM curl enhancing smoothie, Camille Rose Curlaide, Camille Rose Almond Jai butter, Jane Carter's curling curl cream.

3. For better hold combine a style cream with a gel. Be aware of products conflicting with one another and causing white balls. Mix your two products on the back of your hand, to test and see if they ball up and clump. If it does so, on the back of your hand then that combination is not a good one. Try another combo. Good gels for natural hair especially 4C hair: Kinky curly curling custard, Eco olive oil gel, Miss Jessie's Curly Custard.

4. During cold weather, seal your twist out with coconut oil. It will help your hair hold its shape longer.

5. Instead of single two strand twists, create small to medium flat twists. You get way more volume per flat twist, than you will with the same size section of a regular two strand twist. Your first night sections should be 2 inches by 3 inch sections, flat twisted.

6. For a fuller look, end your twists with a bantu knot or use a flexi rod. This gives your twist out more flavor and fullness.

7. Flat twists also give you more stretch, this gives you more hang time.

8. Gain more hang time, by not using a water based product after the third day of  your twist out. You will need  moisture for day one and two, but if you have healthy hair your should be able to retwist with a non water based product. Here are some suggestions: As I am double butter cream (has water but it still gives you stretch), Regular shea butter.

9. On day one of your twist out, after you have set your hair, seal your hair with a cold water rinse. This will give you great definition. You can also seal with half aloe vera juice and half filtered water. Put mixture in fridge and let it get really cold. The cold and aloe vera helps to flatten the hair cuticle. The gives you more definition and hold.

10. For more stretch, reduce your product use in half. Less product equals less shrinkage.

11. Allow your hair to air dry in large braids at least 75%, then create your two strand twists. This will give you way more hang time.

12. Afro hair is like memory foam. The more you shape it into a style the better it will form that shape. So do not try a style once or twice then become frustrated. Continue to do that style over and over for a few weeks. Each time your hair will twist better and better. You will also find you can create the style faster.

Deep conditioning tips

Deep conditioning:
This is done on hair which has been cleansed first.  Applying a product, which contains ingredients that penetrate deep into the cuticle layers. Not all deep conditioners are created equal. A good deep conditioner will improve your hair elasticity and help your hair retain moisture for longer periods. Most deep conditioners require you to use heat for 10 minutes or more. Heat makes the hair cuticle open wider then the deep conditioner is able to penetrate deeper.

HAIR STEAMER GREAT BUY!

Deep conditioning is essential to keeping your hair soft, strengthened and reduce tangles. Deep conditioning on a regular basis will help your retain length.

A good deep conditioner should make your hair more manageable and stronger. Give you softer hair and make untangling easier. Each deep conditioner comes with its own instructions so always follow the directions on the product.

Best heat sources for deep conditioning

Hair steamers are the best heat source to use for deep conditioning. Steam enables the conditioner to penetrate deep and your moisture lasts longer. You should only steam your hair once per week and no longer than 15 minutes each steam session. Steamers are an investment and they tend not to last a long time. You might find a hair steamer at a salon supply store, but in most cases you will need to purchase one online.

Heat conditioning caps are the next best choice for deep conditioning. Heating caps trap hot moisture deep into the cuticle layer. Heating caps are reasonable in price and very simple to use. You can find heat caps at the beauty supply store.

HERE IS THE HEATING CAP I USE

Hooded hair dryers: A dryer is best used for  roller sets, however they work okay for deep conditioning. Hooded dryers are easy to find and economically priced. They do not give you the moist heat that the heat cap gives you. They also do not enable the conditioner to penetrate as deep as the hair steamer does.

Common mistakes naturals make (pt.2)

Seven errors related to cleansing and strengthening

1. Using foods such as eggs, avocados etc as a protein treatment.
Protein is meant to stick to your hair strands and add strength. This extra strength keeps your hair from breaking so easily when manipulated. Food is not small enough to adhere nor penetrate the hair strands. Therefore food cannot function as a protein treatment for your hair. Eat your proteins instead, they benefits you greatly by helping you grow stronger hair. When you use eggs, avocado on your hair they function only as softeners and NOT strengtheners.

2. Not washing your hair weekly.
Hair is apart of your body, therefore it should be kept clean. Daily you collect, sweat, excess sebum, pollutants, dust, germs, products on your hair. Hair also holds an odor from your sweat mixed with pollutants. For these reasons you should wash you hair no less than once per week. Hair grows best on a clean scalp. One of the main causes for slow hair growth is not cleansing it enough.

3. Co washing with conditioner STILL!
Hair conditioner does not clean your hair. Yes it feels good because the conditioner is just building up on your strands co wash after co wash. Unless the bottle states conditioning cleanser or that it can be used to cleanse then it is not a substitute for shampoo. Choose a sulfate free shampoo, conditioning cleanser or a co wash product meant for cleansing.

4. Not drinking 64 ounces of water or more daily.
Our body needs water. If you want your hair to grow out nice and healthy drink at least 64 ounces per day. Many suffer from hard hair, splits ends, mid shaft splits, this comes from dry hair. To look and feel our best we need water in and water on our body. We need water for better blood circulation. Healthy circulation keeps the blood flowing correctly to the hair follicles, stimulating new hair growth.

5. Being afraid of protein treatments
Your hair is over 90% protein therefore it is not sensitive to protein. Protein on the hair is suppose to feel different. Most people are not applying the treatments according to the instructions on the product. then they blame the protein. So someone says you are protein sensitive and you take it as facts. You must know how to properly deep condition your hair. If your hair is fine or breaking a protein is your best bet in most cases. Do not overlook protein it is vital to growing your hair longer and stronger. There are many different protein treatments you can choose from, look for the ones which say hydrolyzed keratin within the top 3 ingredients. Animal proteins are the strongest when dealing with breakage. Opt for milder protein when you are preventing breakage, before it happens.

6. Not following the instructions on the product.
I often get asked how to use a product I always say follow the instructions on the product unless you are using the product differently than it is intended to be used. The instructions are on the bottle for your benefit. Many complain about certain products without considering they did not use the product according to the instructions. Please take time to read the label, that will keep you from misusing the product.

As I am Curl Clarify Shampoo 5.5 PH balanced for your hair health.
Red clay hair and face wash.

7. Clarifying your hair to frequently
Unless you use lots of grease or silicones, your hair should not require a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying to often will lead to dry brittle hair. Once a month should be enough. Instead of using harsh clarifying shampoos try a mud wash or black soap shampoo. Clay washes deep clean the hair without leaving it tangled and stripped. Clay washes condition as they cleanse. As I am has a PH balanced clarifying shampoo.

Good quality black soap you can create up to 5 times the amount of shampoo by diluting this formula.

The leave in conditioner

Afro hair is curly hair and curly hair thrives on moisture. The hair care regimen of those with curly hair must consist of products which feed the hair moisture and products that are properly PH balanced for the hair. There are 3 categories of  hair care: cleansers, conditioners and stylers. Conditioners are the most important of the three. There are different types of conditioners such as: deep conditioners, rinse out quick conditioners, protein treatments and leave in conditioners. The leave in conditioners is the most important product in your hair care regimen. The leave in conditioner is comprised of ingredients which can remain on the hair to provide continuous conditioning to Afro curly hair through out the day. The leave in conditioner was created for your Afro curly hair.

If you are on a budget, the leave in conditioner is the one product you want to splurge on. A good leave in is essential to longer growth retention.  Be sure to invest in a leave in conditioner that is not made up of ,a ton of harsh ingredients. Remember this product remains on your hair until washing, what goes on the hair eventually seeps onto the scalp. Consider this when you shop for your leave in conditioner.

SEVEN QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR  IN A  LEAVE IN CONDITIONER:
1. PH not over 5.0
2. Water as the first ingredient
3. Contains natural butters, oils,  and extracts
4. Least harsh ingredients
5. Economically priced ($1.50 or less per ounce)
6. The colder the touch of the product the more moisturizing   I find it to be.
7. Does it leave the hair moisturized for 2 days or more?

THE WRONG PH BALANCED PRODUCT CAN CREATE A MESS!
The PH of the product is very important because if the PH is over 6.0 that product stands a good chance at raising the hair cuticle. When the hair cuticle is raised higher, moisture quickly escapes the hair. This leaves you with dry, hard hair that forms knots when you manipulate it.  You can keep piling on moisturizer but it will feel as though your hair is soaking up the product yet is still not any softer. In reality the product is just sitting on top of your hair shaft causing buildup, this also causes your hair to dry out even more. Day after day you have applied this high PH product to your hair, and after a week you have a huge brittle mess! This is why PH is so important.

ROTATE THREE LEAVE IN CONDITIONERS
The Coily Queens regimen suggest you have at least 3 leave in conditioners you rotate within your regimen. WHY? Well the needs of our hair changes from time to time,  for various reasons. It is very common to have an awesome product you love and then one day it just no longer works the same. If you rotate your products this is less likely to happen.

A PRODUCT DOES NOT HAVE TO SAY "LEAVE IN CONDITIONER" ON THE BOTTLE, IT ONLY NEEDS TO CONTAIN INGREDIENTS THAT CONDITION AND CAN BE LEFT ON THE HAIR.

A GOOD LEAVE IN CONDITIONER WILL ALSO DOUBLE AS A STYLER.

Top cleansers for 4C Afro coily hair

Hair grows best on a clean scalp, therefore cleaning the hair on a frequent basis is important to the health of your hair.

Those with coily curly hair should stay away from cleansers which dry the hair out. Stay away from sulfates and alcohols, as they dry and tangle coily curly hair. When you get ready to purchase your cleansers look for non sulfate shampoos, conditioning cleansers or co wash products.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT LONG TERM USE OF SULFATES LEADS TO HAIR LOSS

Here are some cleansers that perform well on Afro coily hair. These cleansers leave the hair clean without creating excess tangles during the wash session.

Shea Moisture curl & shine shampoo
  • A non sulfate shampoo

  • Cleans and conditions in one step
  • Leaves your hair soft and easy to untangle

Whichever product you choose to use be sure it is formulated to clean the hair. Conditioners are not made to clean the hair, unless it says cleansing conditioner on the product.
