Five ways to prevent breakouts when taking biotin

Biotin is a great supplement for hair growth. Biotin is also called vitamin B7 or vitamin H.   Many people experience an increase in their hair growth, after taking biotin for few months. Biotin is also great for the skin, however some people experience breakouts while taking it.

If you are one of those who love biotin but experience breakouts, then I have 5 helpful tips for you.

A possible problem with biotin may be that it  increases your sebum production and the sebum clogs your pores. Sebum is our best moisturizer, however in excess it can cause breakouts. Makeup, lotions and dirt gets trapped inside the pore, along with the sebum and that creates acne. This happens when your cleansing regimen is not removing all the dirt daily.

TIPS TO COMBAT BREAKOUTS FROM BIOTIN

1. Drink 64 ounces of water daily.

2. Cleanse your face twice a day and be sure to cleanse well. Going over your face with an astringent or toner after cleansing will let you know if you have removed all residue.

3. Do a bentonite clay masque once or twice a week. The bentonite clay sucks dirt, toxins and product from your pores. Clean pores are the key to no breakouts.

My recipe (simple is best when cleaning your pores)
1/2 tsp bentonite clay
1/2 tsp of red clay
1/2 tsp of organic apple cider vinegar
1/2 tsp of filtered water
(mix together until creamy, adding additional drops  of water   as needed, spread on clean skin, let dry,      then rinse)

4. Drink nettle tea daily. Nettle tea helps to remove toxins from your body and helps with hair growth. Just add one nettle tea bag to your cup of green or black tea and sip away!

5. Drink 8 ounces of water each time you take your supplement.

How much biotin should you take a day?

That is for you to decide. Some people know from experience with the vitamin the maximum they can take daily. There is no set amount which is better for hair growth. It depends on your body. Any vitamin you take, you must consider any other medications you take and inform your doctor.

I take ten thousand mcg, when I am not taking a regular hair skin and nail supplement. I always rotate my supplements.
My rotation goes something like this
3 months Liquid Gold HSN vitamins (capsules)
3 months Mineral Rich liquid vitamin (a B complex)
   3 months 10,000 mcg biotin with a women's one a day

It is best to take a multi vitamin unless you have a deficiency in a particular vitamin.

New Moon Phase hair growth dates for January.

WHAT IS NEW MOON PHASE TRIMMING?
Using the power of the moon as it grows to increase your regular hair growth rate. Man was created with the ability to listen to the earth for guidance.  For centuries farmers have used the lunar chart to plant and treat their crops. The moon controls the ocean and regulates plants. We can take advantage of the moons momentum and double even triple our normal hair growth rate.

1 Corinthians 1:27
But God has chosen the foolish things of this world to confound the wise; and God has chosen the weak things of this world to confound the things which are mighty

IS THIS SOME MAGIC OR WITCHCRAFT?
No, remember God created the moon before He created man. The earth was created to help man and God has given us dominion over all things in it. We can use the earth to our advantage, knowing that God is the ultimate Source. If this is new to you and it sounds strange, do not discount it because you have never heard of it. Nor label this negatively. You should have a regular trim schedule, so why not try a new moon phase trim. You have nothing to lose except bad ends.

HOW TO DO A NEW MOON TRIM
Release all negative energy. If you do this while holding onto negativity then you will cancel out the good energy you are receiving. Detox your mindset before doing a new moon phase trim. Forgive, release and correct all that needs to be.

HOW TO RELEASE
Acknowledge that you have negative thoughts then denounce those thoughts out loud. Pray and affirm your desired outcome. Now you are ready.

On the right day rid your hair of raggedy ends. Be confident and positive. Do not cut your hair in fear of loss. Cut your hair with thoughts of great gain. Visualize the long beautiful hair to come.

Be sure to use trimming shears.
Write down your hair length, after trimming,  then measure your increase in 40 days,
Affirm this hair prayer daily.

That is it!
Now anticipate increased hair growth

Correcting crown breakage and dryness

Lots of black women have a issue with breakage in the crown area. Many complain that their crown area is extra dry, hard and shorter than the rest of their hair. They experience extra tangles and knots in the crown area. Most women have had this issue all of their lives, along with other females in their family. If your crown is not bald, this issue can be corrected. The hair on your crown can be just as healthy as the rest of your hair, just by making a few changes to your hair regimen.

TWO MAIN REASONS YOUR CROWN IS BRITTLE AND BROKEN

1. Lack of moisture
As your hair follicles secrete sebum, that sebum travels down the hair strands. When one does not produce enough certain areas can go lacking. Sebum is what lubricates your hair strands. The sebum usually settles at the lower part of our neck. You will notice many times that the curl pattern of our lower back hair  is a loser softer texture than the rest of our hair. This is due in part to the sebum settling at the base of your neck, giving that hair extra conditioning. However this also  leaves your crown area lacking sebum.  Usually this issue can be easily corrected within 30 days.

HOW TO CORRECT THE LACK OF MOISTURE IN YOUR CROWN AREA

  • Be sure to cleanse hair twice a week or no less than once a week
  • Apply extra moisturizer to the crown or dry areas
  • Treat area with an organic apple cider vinegar treatment
  • Seal moisture into your hair, using one of these products: castor oil, jojoba oil, red palm oil or hemp grease.
  • Baggy overnight, 3 times a week

2. Damage under the scalp from  relaxers, hair dye or heat tools
A large portion of women who have relaxed their hair, have scar tissue under the scalp. In most cases you do not know until your scalp starts to give you trouble.  It affects most women in the crown but it can occur anywhere on the scalp. The affected areas tends to be sore, red, itchy, thin or irritated. These symptoms can exists for years before the hair starts to fallout. The hair loss usually starts  with a dime size bald spot. The bald area will become larger, if left untreated.

If you suspect the above is your issue, you must see a dermatologist asap. Ask the doctor for a scalp biopsy. You need to know what is going on under the scalp. The quicker you seek treatment the more likely you can slow the progression of the hair loss or reverse it.

PREVENTING CROWN BREAKAGE

  • Feed that area moisture everyday, even if the rest of your head does not need it. Remain conscious of your problem areas.
  • Get a aphogee 2 step protein treatment once every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • You can spot treat with protein treatments. Meaning you can choose to just protein treat your crown area only, if you feel the rest of your hair is not breaking a lot.
  • Never lay down without a satin scarf or bonnet.
  • Use both a satin bonnet and a satin pillow case. (works amazingly)
  • Do not wear ponytails or apply pulling in that area.
  • Do not use a brush in that area (fingercombing is best)

False common beliefs about Afro hair

What you believe plays a large part in what you receive. Stop believing common falsehoods concerning black hair. Just because a thing has not happened to you, does not mean it cannot happen.

Here are 5 common beliefs concerning Afro hair.

Change your mindset, change your journey.

1. Afro hair is naturally weak
Afro hair is curly hair. Curly hair is not weak by default. Afro hair is made up of lots of layers of strong keratin. Hair becomes weak when the protein bonds are damaged. This damage comes from bad care or poor health.

2. Wearing fake hair makes Afro hair grow
Fake hair does not make anyone's hair grow faster. Fact is, if your hair root is still open your hair grows daily.  Growth comes from under the scalp. Fake hair cannot control what occurs under the scalp.

3. Afro hair is naturally dry
Afro hair is not naturally dry just because it is curly. If your hair is consistently dry, you need better products and a better regimen. Low sebum production will also make your hair dry.

How to hydrate your hair

4. In order for Afro hair to thrive it must be covered with fake hair
NOT TRUE! You can grow and retain length without relying on fake hair. A protective style does not have to involve fake hair. Keeping your ends tucked is very effective in preventing breakage. Finger combing is also an excellent way of retaining length. You do not have to wear fake hair in order to retain length. Extensions are an option for length retention but not the only way to retain lots of length.

When you do choose the hair extensions route, be sure you are doing it the right way. Most people do not grow as much hair as they could with extensions because they are not protecting their real hair. Learn more about the Braid, Retain and Grow method here.

5. Afro hair naturally grows slow
Lots of black women think that Afro hair grows much slower than white people's hair. This is not true. How fast your hair grows depends a little on genetics, your health and what you eat. If your hair grows slow, there are things you can do to increase your hair growth rate.

Hair loss treatment

Treating hair loss can be a difficult task. This article will help you pinpoint the type of  hair loss you have. Then give you tips to help you seek treatment.

First identify your type of hair loss

Thinning hair

BREAKAGE OR SHEDDING
You feel you have loss enough hair that your hair looks see through. It no longer looks as full as it did a few months ago. Understand that shedding 50 to 150 strands daily is a normal part of the hair life cycle. A shed hair will be the same length as the rest of your hair. Generally you can see the white bulb on the end of your shed hair. This white bulb ensures you that it has shed from under the scalp. If the hairs are shorter than the rest of your hair and have no white bulb that is hair which has broken above the scalp.

NORMAL SHEDDING V/S ABNORMAL SHEDDING
It is normal to lose 50 to 150 strands a day. Shedding is a normal part of the hair cycle. It is abnormal for your hair to shed in clumps, on a consistent basis for several weeks. If this is happening to you. Collect all your shed hair daily, date it and put it in a plastic bag. Compare it each week. This will give you a good ideal as to how much hair you are truly losing, so you can better communicate with your doctor. Also make note as to any other symptoms you are having at the time. Make note if you are on your menstrual  cycle during the excessive shedding time.

Accumulative shedding
Never mistake accumulated shed hair for abnormal shedding. There are certain styles in which we do not untangle our hair for days. When you have not untangled your hair for several days, your shed hair will accumulate.  When you do untangle your hair, the shedding will appear excessive.  Do not be alarmed this is accumulative shedding.

Now decide whether your hair loss is from normal shedding or abnormal shedding.

Balding (clean areas)
You have clean areas on your scalp. The baldness has been there for six months or more. Does the bald spot ever fill in? Or does it stay clean? Get someone to look at the area with a magnifying glass. Do they see open hair follicles or a smooth scalp?

Breakage (split ends)
Your ends look raggedy and sparse. You can feel your hair snapping when you manipulate it. You find lots of hairs varying in length in the sink, your combs or shoulders. Your hair does not retain length. It has been the same length for 6 months.

Solutions to your hair loss

Thinning
If your hair is shedding from the roots in clumps and has done so for more than 2 weeks, then see a doctor as soon as possible. There are many reasons your hair can shed from the roots excessively. Unless you know the inner reason for your shedding you should see a doctor as soon as possible. It can be a vitamin deficiency or a serious health conditioning causing this.

Balding
If no hair will grow in your bald area and it has been longer than a month, it is also time to see a doctor. When you treat hair loss quickly you have a greater chance of restoring your hair. The longer you wait to seek medical treatment the harder it will be to reverse your hair loss or slow the progression.

Breakage
3 main causes of breakage

  • dehydrated hair
  • style tools
  • weak hair

Correct dehydration by improving your hair conditioning regimen. Avoid heat styling tools, combs, brushes or any tools which pull on the hair. Increase the strength of your hair strands by doing a good protein treatment.

Get the most from your dermatologist visit. These visits can be costly, so it is best to be prepared before your office  visit.

  1. Make a list of all your symptoms to share with the doctor.
  2. Writing it down will help you not forget to share it with the doctor.
  3. If you are paying out of pocket, ask the doctor for a cash discount.
  4. Ask for a scalp biopsy on your first visit.
  5. Ask to be checked for vitamin deficiencies.

The best conditioning ingredient for 4C hair or dry hair

Does your hair feel hard?

Dry or brittle? Knots?

Does your hair not hold moisture all day?

If any of these are your hair issues, then you should use products high in glycerin.

Pillow soft twist outs!

Glycerin is a super softener and humectant.
Nothing makes your hair as soft as glycerin.

Glycerin is the best softener, conditioner and detangler for coily hair. Look for glycerin in the top 5 ingredients. Glycerin is okay to use all year round, but it does not mix well with flat ironing.

A leave in conditioner is any product that contains ingredients which can be left on the hair and provides conditioning to your hair.

It does not have to be labeled as a "leave in" conditioner.

TOP GLYCERIN BASED HAIR PRODUCTS
1. Coily Custard, by Miss Jessie's

2. SCURL Curl activator

3. CQR-Super Detangler, Conditioner
If you rather make a completely natural glycerin leave in, her is an awesome recipe.
This can be used as a detangler and a leave in conditioner

4. Cantu curl activator

5. Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie

CONS:

When using the Scurl or Cantu curl activator, you might find you need to use more of your hold product. The high glycerin content in these products tend to make the hair so soft, that it does not hold a style well.

If you intend to heat straighten or roller set your hair do not use the scurl product or the cantu curl activator. A large amount of glycerin does not work well with flat irons. It also does not set the hair very well and can make it gummy when mixed with heat from a flat iron.

Straightening 4C tightly coily hair

This regimen is an important  key to heat straightening tightly coily hair and reducing your chances of heat damage.

The following regimen should be done 3 weeks prior to flat ironing.

Follow these steps for 3 weeks prior to heat straightening your hair.
Notice you apply the aphogee 2 step treatment day 19, this is 3 days before your flat ironing day.

Be sure what you do on what day. The steps are very specific.

PRODUCTS NEEDED BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

Clarifying or deep cleansing shampoo
Moisturizing non sulfate shampoo
Aphogee 2 step treatment
Moisturizing deep conditoner
Leave in conditioner
Organic Apple cider vinegar
Silicone heat protectant
Anti humectant
Ceramic flat iron
Seamless comb

DAY 22 STEP BY STEP:

Step one) Shampoo hair with a shampoo that has a PH of  6.0-7.0.

Step two) Deep condition with a moisturizing conditioner using heat for 20 minutes.

Step three) Apply a protein spray to your hair strands to protect them from the excessive heat.

Step four) Apply a good leave in conditioner

Step five) Braid hair into large sections and allow your hair to air dry. Do not blow dry this is a good way to get heat damage by applying double heat. Air dry only.

Step six) Apply more leave in conditioner then apply heat protection that contains silicones. Silicones help protect your hair from heat  straightening.  Allow the product to air dry on hair before you flat iron or press your hair.

Step seven)  To reduce the chances of heat damage keep heat tool between 350 and 400 degrees.
Do not do more than 3 passes per section.

Step eight)  The flat iron
Detangle hair with seamless comb
Gently smooth flat iron over small section of hair
Comb through section with seamless comb again. (repeat if needed)
The next pass uses the comb chase method.
Your hair should be straight using this method.
If not then make your section smaller the next time.

After you complete each section smooth your fingers or comb through section to see if hair breaks or falls out. If it does then you are using to high of heat, reduce heat for next heat pass.
Flat iron 2014

Smooth a little grease or anti humectant over each section as you finish it. This will help keep hair from reverting so quickly. Rolling the hair with a large roller will also help.
Use after heat straightening. Helps to prevent reversion  and gives amazing sheen.

THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT HEAT STRAIGHTENING

Your flat ironed hair should feel soft and not break easily.
If your hair feels rough or hard, then the products you use are not good enough for your hair.
Search for better products to give you more moisture.
Also examine how healthy your hair is before you heat straighten.
Never heat straighten dehydrated damaged hair.

USING HENNA TO COVER GRAY HAIR

What makes hair turn gray?
The cells responsible for giving your hair color stop producing melanin. Hydrogen peroxide sometimes builds up in the follicles and bleaches your color. A deficiency in B12 can lead to premature graying. Pituitary problems and thyroid  problems also cause premature graying.

UNDERSTAND THAT ANYTHING TAKEN TO PREVENT GRAY HAIR WILL ONLY AFFECT NEW HAIR GROWING FROM THE SCALP.  THE ONLY THING YOU CAN DO ABOUT YOUR CURRENT GRAY HAIR IS COLOR OVER IT WITH SOME TYPE OF PRODUCT, WHETHER THAT IS HAIR DYE, HENNA, BLACK TEA, ETC.

Correcting and preventing gray hair
Green tea (3 cups a day)
molasses (1 tbsp daily)
jojoba oil (3 times a week)
Hair skin & nail vitamins (daily)

CQR-Reverse the gray serum

Covering your gray hair naturally
Most people resort to using hair dye to cover their gray hair. But hair dye can be really toxic. A healthier alternative is to use henna to cover your gray hair. Henna can be tricky so do a thorough research before you start applying henna to your hair. When using henna you are limited to red coloring. The red tones will vary depending on your hair color and the quality of the henna you use.

Important tips about henna
  • Henna does NOT lighten your hair like hair dye can.
  • Henna adds color to your hair
  • Choose a henna which is certified high pure lawsone content. Lawsone is the only ingredient you want on your bag of henna.
  • Pure henna is a green color, if it is any other color you do not have pure henna.
  • Henna is permanent. Once you get your desired color, only touch up your new growth. Applying to many layers of henna, can lead to chronic dry hair.

Using indigo
  • Indigo is used to cover your gray hair. It will make your dark hair shiny black with reddish highlights over the gray.
  • Henna and indigo are two separate products, from natural plant sources.
  • To get a rich black color you first apply henna, then go back and apply the indigo.
  • Indigo is a two step application process.
  • In general most people do this over a two day period.

Cassia Obovata will turn your gray hair a yellow color.

Other amazing henna benefits.

  • Henna strengthens your hair and makes it look thicker.
  • Treats scalp infections due to its anti fungal, anti bacterial and anti microbial properties.
  • Gives your dull hair a nice gloss.
