HELP, my braid extensions are to tight!

It's midnight, but you cannot sleep because your scalp is throbbing. Earlier in the day, you got a set of braid extensions. You should never allow someone to intentionally braid your hair to tight. Doing so is a sure way to cause permanent hair loss.

Signs you need to leave your braid appointment

1.  If you are wincing every time she does a braid. Extensions should be secure, but not uncomfortable.

2.  If you need to take a painkiller before or during braid service. STOP!

3.  If you tell the Braider it is to tight and she continues to braid to tight. STOP!

Test the tightness of your braids. Move your braid side to side, from the root.  It should do so without causing you any pain.

Say you got your hair braided and none of those things happened as you were getting it done. Your scalp felt fine when you left the appointment. But within a few hours or at bedtime, your scalp begins to hurt. Our muscles relax as we sleep. It is common for annoyances to be magnified when we lay down. Even to the point that it disturbs our sleep.

5 Ways to loosen tight braids

1. Spray scalp with warm water

2. Apply some cold creamy leave in conditioner to tight area.

3. If a large portion of your scalp hurts. Run water over your scalp for about ten to 30 seconds.

4. Rub an ice cube over sore area.

5. Rub some pure cold aloe vera gel onto scalp.

Gently massage scalp after each of these methods.

There are times when you will need to remove the braids or weave quickly. Take this seriously. You can get "permanent" root damage.

1. Pain still bad, after 48 hours.
REMOVE THEM!

2. White bumps  on the scalp. Those bumps are inflamed hair follicles, filled with fluid.
REMOVE THEM!

Hair loss testimony

I received this testimony from a lady who has been dealing with hair loss.

"Ms. V-thank you so much for your advice about my trip to the dermatologist, regarding my  hair loss. I went in there armed with my baggies of hair and knowledge. I requested the blood work and biopsy, as you indicated in your article. We found out that my hair loss was due to kidney stones I had around Christmas (shock to my entire system), the multiple rounds of prednisone I was on for the stones and my asthma (prednisone replaces your normal hormone generation and, after long term use your body is confused when you stop so you lose hair), and vitamin deficiency. Best news is that the hair loss isn't permanent! It should start growing back in a month or 2. Thank you so much for your guidance!"

"My dermatologist said that I was the most prepared patient regarding hair loss she's had in her 35 years of medicine. I gave her the link to your article and she said that she will share it with every woman that schedules an appointment! Thank you so much for your guidance!"
E. Waiters

Of course I thanked this young lady for such a great follow up. I love good reports. I love helping women with their hair issues. Hair loss can be so mentally draining and women need answers. Her testimony made me smile for hours. If you are going through a hair loss issue, read the article that helped her. It might help you as well.

Grow your thinning edges back in 40 days

IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND
These tips work the best for the following hair loss situations
a. Your edges do not have bald spots. Areas void of hair.
b. Your hair thinning, is less than a year old.
c. Currently you are not wearing wigs, weaves or applying any type of tension to your edges.

BALD EDGES WHICH HAVE BEEN THAT WAY A LONG TIME
If you have clean bald spots on your edges, I recommend that you make an appointment with the dermatologist. Ask the doctor for a scalp biopsy to see what is going on under the scalp. You stand a greater chance at recovering your hair when you seek treatment early. The absolute worst thing you can do for your hair loss is continue to put stress on the area by wearing extensions or using harsh chemicals. Go ahead and make that doctor's appointment. Write down everything you can think of to tell the doctor about your hair loss.

Examining bald areas for yourself, in the meantime

Get a friend to look at your scalp up close with a magnifying glass. Have them examine any bald areas. Even if no hair is there, if the follicle is still alive they should see the small hole. Ask them do they see any holes. Seeing holes is a good sign that the follicle is still alive. This gives you a great chance at recovering hairs in those holes. If no holes are present the hair follicle is most likely closed. Sometimes you will see a follicle that is partially closed. If you see some which appear to be closed make a dermatologist appointment asap. You need to know what is going on under the scalp. Medical tests are the only way to know that.

4 SIMPLE SOLUTIONS FOR RECENT HAIR LOSS

If you have recently received the hair loss, it will be fairly easy to recover that hair. When I say recently, I mean within the last 3 months. The older the hair loss the harder the recovery.

  1.  Remove all stress from the edges. Do not even use a brush or toothbrush on your edges.
  2.  Create a stimulating oil blend and massage that oil onto your scalp for ten minutes daily.
  3.  Cleanse scalp weekly and condition it daily.
  4.  Take a hair growth supplement or a multi vitamin.

Doing those simple things, you will see your edges recover in 40 days. The main change is to immediately stop anything which appears to  take your edges out.  Your hair will recover in no time.

Many years ago, my edges started thinning out. I was wearing a curly hair sew in, with a leave out. Daily I was brushing my edges in attempts to blend my leave out with the curly weave. After months of this treatment, my edges began to thin a lot.  I didn't notice it until I saw my edges on a picture.

I immediately stopped using a brush and did the steps above. My edges recovered fully within a month.

Other tips to recover your edges

1. Do not use gel.
2. No type of brushing of your edges,
3. Moisturize them daily and smooth back using your palms only.
4. At bedtime, braid or cornrow your edges going in a downward motion. Simply one braid on each side of your head, from top to the ear.
5. Cover hair with  a satin scarf or at night
6. When you deep condition add extra product to your edges.
7. Invest in a hair growth oil. I recommend the liquid gold sulfur oil

Hair loss treatment

Treating hair loss can be a difficult task. This article will help you pinpoint the type of  hair loss you have. Then give you tips to help you seek treatment.

First identify your type of hair loss

Thinning hair

BREAKAGE OR SHEDDING
You feel you have loss enough hair that your hair looks see through. It no longer looks as full as it did a few months ago. Understand that shedding 50 to 150 strands daily is a normal part of the hair life cycle. A shed hair will be the same length as the rest of your hair. Generally you can see the white bulb on the end of your shed hair. This white bulb ensures you that it has shed from under the scalp. If the hairs are shorter than the rest of your hair and have no white bulb that is hair which has broken above the scalp.

NORMAL SHEDDING V/S ABNORMAL SHEDDING
It is normal to lose 50 to 150 strands a day. Shedding is a normal part of the hair cycle. It is abnormal for your hair to shed in clumps, on a consistent basis for several weeks. If this is happening to you. Collect all your shed hair daily, date it and put it in a plastic bag. Compare it each week. This will give you a good ideal as to how much hair you are truly losing, so you can better communicate with your doctor. Also make note as to any other symptoms you are having at the time. Make note if you are on your menstrual  cycle during the excessive shedding time.

Accumulative shedding
Never mistake accumulated shed hair for abnormal shedding. There are certain styles in which we do not untangle our hair for days. When you have not untangled your hair for several days, your shed hair will accumulate.  When you do untangle your hair, the shedding will appear excessive.  Do not be alarmed this is accumulative shedding.

Now decide whether your hair loss is from normal shedding or abnormal shedding.

Balding (clean areas)
You have clean areas on your scalp. The baldness has been there for six months or more. Does the bald spot ever fill in? Or does it stay clean? Get someone to look at the area with a magnifying glass. Do they see open hair follicles or a smooth scalp?

Breakage (split ends)
Your ends look raggedy and sparse. You can feel your hair snapping when you manipulate it. You find lots of hairs varying in length in the sink, your combs or shoulders. Your hair does not retain length. It has been the same length for 6 months.

Solutions to your hair loss

Thinning
If your hair is shedding from the roots in clumps and has done so for more than 2 weeks, then see a doctor as soon as possible. There are many reasons your hair can shed from the roots excessively. Unless you know the inner reason for your shedding you should see a doctor as soon as possible. It can be a vitamin deficiency or a serious health conditioning causing this.

Balding
If no hair will grow in your bald area and it has been longer than a month, it is also time to see a doctor. When you treat hair loss quickly you have a greater chance of restoring your hair. The longer you wait to seek medical treatment the harder it will be to reverse your hair loss or slow the progression.

Breakage
3 main causes of breakage

  • dehydrated hair
  • style tools
  • weak hair

Correct dehydration by improving your hair conditioning regimen. Avoid heat styling tools, combs, brushes or any tools which pull on the hair. Increase the strength of your hair strands by doing a good protein treatment.

Get the most from your dermatologist visit. These visits can be costly, so it is best to be prepared before your office  visit.

  1. Make a list of all your symptoms to share with the doctor.
  2. Writing it down will help you not forget to share it with the doctor.
  3. If you are paying out of pocket, ask the doctor for a cash discount.
  4. Ask for a scalp biopsy on your first visit.
  5. Ask to be checked for vitamin deficiencies.

How to be a smart natural

Trim those bad ends!

If your goal is long healthy beautiful hair, then you must a regular trim schedule. Your first cut should be the removal of all your thin ends, puffy ends and any other damaged looking hair. You want to trim it down so you can start out with healthy hair. After your healthy hair cut, if you practice good hair care practices, you should be able to trim every 4th month. This equals to 3 cuts a year. That is a good trim schedule to maintain healthy hair if you have a healthy hair regimen. If you brush, flat iron straighten, color or comb your hair a lot, you will then need to trim your hair more often. The ends are the oldest part of your hair, and you must work hard to keep them healthy. You want your hair thick from the base to the ends. When you smooth your hair up, are your ends see through? How about when you put your hair in two strand twists, are your ends really thin and uneven? If so then it is time for a good trim. Be a smart natural and maintain healthy ends.

DO YOUR TRIMS ON THE RIGHT DAY EACH MONTH FOR INCREASE HAIR GROWTH. LEARN ABOUT THE NEW MOON PHASE TRIMMING HERE!

Stay away from Dominican blow outs!
Say no to harsh blow outs!!!
Lots of people love the way in which Dominican hair salons blow dry and flat iron hair. Sometimes you want to take a break from your curly hair and go with a straight look. When you feel like this by pass any Dominican salon. The popular Dominican blow out is achieved through intense blow drying the hair as a round brush is being brushed through the hair. Then the hair is flat irons on high heat. The combination of brushing, blow drying and flat ironing is way to much heat and pulling on Afro curly hair. Blow drying the hair with a round brush is actually how caucasions blow dry their hair for lots of body and silky straight hair. No doubt your hair will look good, but the short term damage is not worth it. I have seen people only get it done once and still encounter breakage and some heat damage. Be a smart natural and by pass this service. Flat iron your own hair or do a roller set. Visit youtube for help and practice until you get it perfect.

HERE IS A REGIMEN YOU CAN FOLLOW BEFORE YOU FLAT IRON YOUR HAIR. THIS WILL HELP YOU REDUCE YOUR CHANCES OF HEAT DAMAGE, HERE!

Stay away from bleach and permanent color!

Color is pretty but it is also damaging. In particular permanent color. When you color your hair you will alter your hair texture slightly. Bleach weakens your hair cuticle and leaves the hair vulnerable to damage. Once you add color you need to change your moisture regimen. Whatever you are doing for moisture you want to triple that. Be a smart natural stay away from permanent color or bleach. Get some colored extensions to help satisfy your urge to color your hair.

MORE GREAT INFORMATION ON COLOR HERE!

Never use baking soda on your hair!
Ummm NO!
Baking soda is used by some to lift the hair cuticle to allow better penetration of deep conditioners and products. However this is a damaging practice. Baking soda is full of sodium which is very drying to the hair. Baking soda is also abrasive to the hair cuticle. Continuous use of baking soda will leave the hair damaged. Be a smart natural and by pass this remedy.

Never texturize your hair!
Just give me curls!
So you have been natural for 18 months and you still do not know how to manage and style your hair. You are frustrated and think a texturizer will be the answer to your hair issues. You think the texturizer will gently relax your curl pattern so you can so call better manage your hair. There is nothing gentle about a texturizer. A texturizer is another marketing word for a relaxer. You see the woman on the front of the box with the relaxer curl pattern and you think, yes that would be nice. But not so fast. First know that a texturizer is a permanent process and you will not longer be natural. Second know that is is very hard to just relax the curl pattern on tightly curly hair. Usually what happens the persons ends up not with loose curls but with straight hair. So now you have an even bigger issue of under processed hair. Under processing the hair means you need to work even harder to keep it from breaking off. Now remember you thought this texturizer would make your hair care easier. But now you have even more work to do and you cannot achieve the natural styles you had before. Your wash and go will not looks the same.  Your twist outs will not have as much volume.  The majority of the people I know who have texturized their hair have regretted it within a week of doing it. So think long and hard before you take this step. Especially if your hair is longer than a TWA. Be a smart natural and by pass the texturizer/relaxer.

Following a specific regimen:
When we consistently take care of anything it will flourish, and your hair is no different. So have a specific daily, weekly hair care regimen for your hair and scalp. Cleanse and condition the hair on a regular basis. If you have no ideal on how to develop a regimen, no problem. You can start the CoilyQueens Regimen today. The dangers of relaxers (a must read)

Women go natural  for a variety of reasons. Those ladies who went natural because it was the "in" thing to do, will often be tempted to relax again. They convince themselves that Afro hair is to difficult and that straight relaxed hair is much easier. Some of them do not like their hair texture and most do not like the shrinkage that comes with Afro hair. At least every other day, I see comments stating,  they are tired and are tempted to go back to relaxing,  When people make the "back to relaxer"  announcement they are usually trying to get people to give them a reason why they should not go back to relaxing.  I will give you the ultimate reason why you should NEVER go back to relaxing your beautiful Afro  hair.

Limp straight hair
Think before you act!

When you apply that relaxer chemical to your hair,  you stand a great chance of permanently damaging your hair follicles. It does not make much difference, if whether you did your relaxer at home or you went to a professional.  There are lots of black women who get in their mid thirties and start to have issues with their scalp. First it starts with itching in a certain area, usually the crown. Then the scalp can become sore to the touch. This itchiness and soreness can stay that way for years, until one day you notice,  the hair has significantly thinned in that area. Many times you will notice a dime size or or quarter size bald spot, which seems to appear overnight. But it has not been overnight, your hair follicles have been dying slowly each day. So what causes this type of hair loss? Inflamed scar tissue under the scalp from past relaxer applications. Yes you can get burns under your scalp from the relaxer chemicals. When the burns heal they leave scar tissue. The scar tissue gets in the way of your hair growth at the root. You hair grows but the scar tissue prohibits it from sprouting from the scalp. Eventually the hair follicles completely close.  Because this condition happens very slowly it is hard to convince many black women that this happens a lot. Think about the fact that by the time a black woman hits 35, she has been relaxing her hair for 25 years at least. She has probably had at least 6 relaxers each year. That is a lot of harsh chemicals exposed to your hair and scalp. It is almost impossible for that chemical to not touch your scalp. This is not scare tactic, this is knowledge so you can make an educated decision on continuing to relax  or going back to relaxing your beautiful God blessed hair.

So what can be done about this condition?

Early treatment is crucial!

If your hair itches in a specific spot all of the time go see a dermatologist. If your scalp is sore in one area off and on, go see a dermatologist. Early detection is key. Tell the dermatologist all of your symptoms and be totally honest. He or she will want to know if  you ever used relaxers. The only way to know what is going on under your scalp is for the doctor to do a scalp biopsy. Understand that this can happen from just one relaxer application. It does not matter how many years you used relaxers. There is no cure for this type of hair loss. The doctor will treat it with steroid shots to the scalp. The earlier you seek treatment the more likely the shots will work to stop the progression of the bald area. You may not get back the hair you loss but the shots can stop you from losing more hair.

So does a relaxer sound tempting after hearing this?
